Exhaust Cross-pipe Flattened

I've been meaning to ask this for a while, but just remembered today.

The cross-pipe on my exhaust coming over from the driver's side to where it tee's in with the passenger side pipe is slightly flattened where it runs across the truck under the tranny. It has been like this since day 1 and I bought the truck new. Just wondering if this was done at the factory or if I have a reason for a dealership visit before the warranty runs out. It definitley looks like it was done at the factory as there is no sign of damage (i.e. looks intentionally flattened).

I'm not sure I'm crazy about it. Why in the world would you do that as it would tend to increase exhaust restriction and hurt performance, right? Maybe for ground clearance, but I don't see that it would make all that much difference.

Anyone else notice this on their trucks? See signature for type of truck.

It is that way from the factory. It is a bit of restriction, but it really does not hurt performance on a stock truck. It is done for a *slight* ground clearance advantage.

I used to work for GM - exhaust systems on the GMT800 many years ago ( mid 90's) - reason being is that the pipe is used in many applicacations with clearances to maxium configured engine / option solutions -- where you have amble amount of clearance - others may have issues ..

also clearances for powertrain assembly underload - engine rock / longitudial roll
