Service Airbag Message

As I was driving my 2004 Silverado 2500 home last night, I had the message "Service Airbag" come up on the DIC. It came and went for most of my 20 mile commute home.

This morning I got in the truck and after running it for about 35 min, the message reappeared. I then parked the truck for about 5 hours, got in it to go out and drove 20 miles to work and never had the message come up.

Any advice???

Thanks

MIKE

my advice to you is that no advice will help unless you find out code it is that is stored in the airbag system...

it would be like asking a blind person to drive crose country vy himself without hitting anything

but anyways, there is 1 of 100 reasons that light could be comming on, and unless you wanna play pin the tail on the donkey find out what code that is somehow :bs:

the best i can tell you is check all the wiring under both front seats to make sure none have rubbed thru on the seat rails, that is the only thing that you will be able to notice without a scan tool telling you where to look

I have an 03 2500HD. Right after doing the steering shaft relube my service air bag light came on and has been on ever since. I took it to the dealer and they said it is the air bag coil. I ask if it was a big deal they said no but for $350 to fix it, it is just fine. Just my two cents.

How funny is this...............My truck sits for 2 days as I drive my wife's car and now the light hasn't come back on.

So I send my truck to the dealer to have the service airbag light checked. They originally tell me its a switch down under the kick panel they need to replace to the tune of $250.

I get to the dealer this afternoon to pick it up, only to find that the real problems is the airbag coil to the tune of $445. They didn't charge me for the new switch in the kick panel, but I am just curious to know if I am getting jerked around here.......any advice would be greatly appreciated

Generally a dealership doesn't know how to do diagnostics, they jsut throw parts a problem until it goes away. Take it to another dealership and see if you get the same answer.

But in generals I wouldn't mess around with the airbag system. If you do decide to check the connections (which it may very well be) make sure you ground yourself to the vehicle to discharge whatever static electricity you built up prior to touching any of the connectors (a statis spark from you can set off an airbag, or damage the electronics in the airbag control module possibly making the problem worse).

I've worked with Airbag controls for a while now and I can tell you that if you have a light on you want to get it checked out asap. It could mean anything between the the airbag not going off... or going off in a slow speed impact when it shouldn't

Thanks for the input, its headed for the dealer to be fixed Wednesday, much to my dismay

Turns out it was the airbag coil in the steering wheel. I was a little taken back by how much was involved with putting that in. The dealer told me this does happen, though its not too common.
