Airbag Going Off From Plowing?

I heard from a friend of mine that while I'm plowing with my truck, if I hit something, it will cause the airbags to go off. Is this true? Anyone know if GM uses pin-type sensors for the airbags?

Sensors detect deceleration. It is unlikely the plow would transfer enough shock through the truck to deploy the bags. Not too much different of an impact than hitting a large pothole in the dry.

Now if you hit something that stops you dead in your tracks I wouldn't be so sure. That might do it.

I believe the plow prep package comes with a on off switch for the air bag. Somebody can correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have the package on my truck but still plow with a 8ft Boss pro plow with no problems. I think they say to keep it under 15mph and you should be fine. Who goes that fast any ways with a plow down?

If you hit something that will generate a 150G pulse to the front bumper yeah you'll probably set off the airbag. Thats essentially running into a brick wall at about 30. Keep it at reasonable pick-up truck plowing speeds.

No automobile uses "pin-type" sensors. There are remote sensors (we call them satellites) that are in full time communication to the central airbag controller. Some of these sensors relay an acceleration reading to the controller up to 10000 times a second. The acceration seen at the sensor has to meet calibrated parameters in the central module for it to fire. That means only a sustained crash event will set off the airbag (remember airbags are NOT supposed to deploy in low G-impact crashes).

No, there is no off-on switch for the driver side airbag on th snow plow package.
