So i took my truck in to the dealership yesterday and told them that i had a clunking in my steering wheel. They apparently took it for a ride and confirmed that thats what it was. I tried getting Gm to cover the cost but they wouldnt because of how many miles are on the truck. So I paid $150 out of pocket to get it fixed only to drive home and then find that it didnt fix the problem. Turns out it was the power steering pump. I'm having them replace the pump with a remanufactured one cuz I cant afford a new one (~$440).

 

My question is... Would the steering shaft cause the power steering pump to fail?? If thats the case Im going to call Gm back and see what I can get them to do about it.

No. I would work with the dealer,since they didnt correct the problem the first time. They could cut you some slack on the pump.

well Im having them install a remanufactured pump. $97 for the pump and $197ish for the labor. So im looking at $300 there, then Im having them put the old shaft back in so the pump job should cost around $150 after applying what I paid for the shaft. Im still gonna have to deal with the old shaft which im not too thrilled about.

Actually if they installed the new shaft for a total of $150, that is a pretty good price.

I already got it back and had them take out the new shaft. Its really not bad. I dont notice much so I'll be fine with the old shaft till I get out to cali and start working. The pump ended up costing me a total of $330.
