Gm Service Bulletin For Nbs Trailer Wiring

Recommended Posts

Posted

Today I got a hard copy of the GM Service bulletins for trailer wiring on the new body style.

They are:

Wiring for adding a brake controller

Wiring to add and aftermarket controller for trucks with the factory controller

Adding the factory Integrated Controller

Auxillary power to 7-way trailer connector

I can scan these documents in as PDF, but have no place to host them, as they are around 1mb each.

Does the forum have hosting available?

OK, after scanning in the docs, only the Installation Aftermarket Controller instructions were over 1MB. Here are the other 3.

Ok, I rescanned the "big" file at a lower DPI, the pictures suck, but the instructions are good.

And in case anyone is wondering the files are a page short because I didn't scan the last blank pages I was given.

SinisterSS' pictures are way better anyway. Just thought folks would like to see the GM documents.

Thanks for posting the service bulletins! My question is in reference to a 2004 Denali that I recently got and hooking up a prodigy brake controller. The truck is supposed to be factory wired for towing - does that include the brake controller wiring (and not just lights)? I have the adapter harness that plugs into the rear of my prodigy brake controller - the other end is a GM 3015 plug - which I'm assuming mates to the truck somewhere under the dash. However, I have not been able to find the mating connector. Should there be one and if so where specifically should I look? If not is there some other truck wiring harness that I need to wire in so I can connect to my brake controller adapter harness? From the service bulletin starting in 2007 there is no longer a pigtail connector harness plug, although there are still pigtail wires under the dash that can be spliced. That would lead me to believe my Denali (being 2004) has a harness w/ plug - I just haven't been able to locate it. Please advise & thanks in advance for any info. you have.

I'm using the 30amp connection for a 100 watt two way radio in the cab" dont need brake controller I have surge brakes, and Im using the 40amp connection as a charge terminal for my aux battery and its also connected to the 7 wire plug in the back of the truck , I can pull the 40 amp fuse and run an small inverter or camper power off the 7 wire plug in the back, will not run down my starting battery you must put another fuse between the trailer terminal and the wire to the plug though otherwise if you risk frying the wire when over loaded

clearly the 5 page document has everything you need to know see pag 5 item 8.4 thats what I meant by fusing if you put a second battery, otherwise risk frying the harness all the way to the back of the truck$$ I grounded my 2nd battery and ran pos+ wire to the 40amp terminal from there I added a inline 40amp fuse to the trailer connector. now the only problem is if you draw 30-40 amps off that for an extended time you will drain both batteries. I just pull the 40 amp fuse under the plastic cover.

other uses for the brake controller terminal " if you dont need it for its intended use" is a audio power amp up to 30amps, just tap the wire under the dash and run it under the carpet to rear seat where your amp is. Don't forget to hook up the 30amp teminal LAST under the hood

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
