6.0 2500hd Factory Exhaust.

I have a 2002 2500HD with the factory exhaust. I can't imagine any aftermarket exhaust making any more power considering the pipes are huge on this thing. It would appear to be a little smaller than dual 3" before and after the muffler then it goes into a single 3.5" tailpipe. Has anyone had any power increases from aftermarket exhausts with similar factory exhaust?

The factory engineers have gone to great lengths to get the exhaust to flow on these trucks. Most aftermarket exhausts claim to out flow the factory units. Don't know if this is true. However I have seen and heard many complain after changing the exhaust 1) excessively loud exhaust 2) gas mileage suffered 3) low end power suffered and 4) problems with aftermarket exhaust rotting out quickly. After hearing so many complaints why would I want to change it? I bought a truck, not a race car. Sure more power would be nice, but I think that the exhaust on these trucks was very nicely thought out and performs very well.

If you want a change in tone, just change out the muffler. I had my whole system changed, but it didnt really hurt my truck. Duals have to flow better then a single pipe.

I have a 1500 HD 6.0 which has the 5.3 exhuast system, if I had the 2500 exhuast I would not have changed it. If i had known for all the resons above. Too noisey, lost mpg, and lost low end power. But I do like the dual look. Like the song says I wish I didn't know now what I didn't know than.

I am having the same dilemma with my 6.0. From what I have read online and heard from local exhaust shops, the 6.0 gets loud very easy with dual exhaust, which I don't want. The best solution I have found is to only replace the muffler (with a Flo-Pro I hear), but I also get just as many people, including a GM tech friend of mine, that there is no power difference and GM really set the exhaust up good on these. I guess for only 159.00 and a self-install the Flo-Pro might be worth a shot, but I keep second-guessing. What to do....

I installed a Flo-pro on my 2003 HD w/6.0l. So far I'm pretty happy with the sound level and it installed very easily with the stock pipes. I also installed a 4" stainless tip. Looks and sounds great. All for $200.00 and 2 bottles of wine for the install. I'm past the point of needing to turn heads with my loud beast. With my camper on the back and going up a long hill on the highway, I'm glad I don't have duals or a Flowmaster set-up. No drone!!! I talked to the techs at Flowmaster and they openly said they don't recomend their set-up, unless you want to turn heads. With a K&N FIPK and this muffler it sounds great at 3500+rpm and mellow close to home. My 2 cents.....

I'm not fimiliar with the flo-pro. It probably doesn't affect the performance of the motor at all just the sound. One thing to keep in mind is that if you take of the factory system you are taking off a nice stainless steel muffler that has no worries of ever rotting out. Just food for thought.

Can anyone suggest a chromed or stainless steel exhaust tip for the stock pipe (I have an 8.1 but I think it's the same). I want to leave the stock muffler and pipes. Also input on chrome vs. stainless and type of fastener for the tip is appreciated too. Thanks.

The spot welds on the outer casing rotted out on mine at 60,000km(35,000miles). When I put my camper on and did some driving, it sounded like a diesel. The Flo-pro muffler is a welded muffler like a Flowmaster. Much better construction. I would say it flows more air, based on the sound at higher rpm.

Looks like I have the same truck as you, but without the Quadrasteer. You are saying that GM installed the 5.3 exhaust system on the 1500HD with a 6.0?? I'd have to believe the 1500HD and the 2500HD came with the same exhaust system.

I've run a couple of different dual systems on a 5.3L motor, including no mufflers with just cats, and they sound cool for awhile. But it sure sucks having to pay for another exhaust system when the pipes rot. I upgraded to SS mufflers and tips on my last system, but the pipes were almost gone when I sold the Tahoe. I'm pretty happy with the sound of the stock exhaust and don't plan on cutting up the stock SS system.

I went with true duals on my 6.0l. It definetly is loud, but it sounds great. If your crusing on the highway with the radio on, you don't even hear it. When you get on it though, it is really loud.

Yea, both exhaust on the 1500HD & 2500HD 6.0 are the same, 2.75" pipes dualed to the muffler then single back. Also, Im pretty sure the 8.1 has the same size piping.

Well, my '01 6.0 2500HD's factory exhaust has dual 3" pipes going into 1 muffler, then dual 3" pipes coming out of the muffler, then joining together into one 3.5" tailpipe behind the muffler...
