Overloaded My Truck

Went to pick up some sod for my mom's yard today. I briefly looked on the internet to see how much a pallet might weigh and saw a couple numbers... 1,200 and 1,800. So I'm thinking maybe 1,800 lbs. But, I was dumb and didn't even ask how much their pallet weighed before the forklift loaded it up. I saw the truck on the bumpstops, but didn't think it was much of a problem since it's only a 5 minute drive. After getting to the house and starting to unload some of it, I'm thinking, "d**n, how much DOES this stuff weigh?" Called them up and they said about 2,300 lbs.

:banghead:

Lesson learned for a n00b. I hope I didn't damage anything. Should I be inspecting anything?

Anyone else want to make me feel better by saying they've hauled more?

All I had was my cell phone...

Now thats what I call a redneck lowering kit, jk. Thats not too bad of an overload. Some guys put 3000+ lbs around here in a 1/2 ton, I dont trust it to hold that much when mine squats pretty good with 1400 lbs in the bed.

I'm sure you drove "responsibly", with no hard accelerating, going too fast over bumpy roads, etc, I'm confident no harm was done, especially with such a short drive. In my younger days, I did a few full throttle accelerations with a 3-4000 trailer. Not quite 2 years later, I bought a new transmission. That's a lesson I learned very well.

Yeah, I'm not really worried about the transmission. It was a really short drive, with only a few stops, and I drove pretty slow to make sure the sod didn't move around. My concern was at the rearend. And, hopefully, the pallet didn't dent my bed.

It started raining on us, so there's still about 500 lbs in the back. It does look nice with it leveled out, though! Good thing I don't have that Rough Country leveling kit in. Now, that would have been ridiculous. LOL.

I was just looking at the pics again. I should have taken that storage box out and had the sod moved further forward, towards the cab, to place more weight on the front wheels.

It would've helped a little, but for a short trip like that it shouldn't hurt it too much...I believe the payload on the NBS is generally around 1,900 lbs.

I tried the same trick, but they balked at putting a pallet in the back of my 1/2 ton step side. I asked why, and they said it weighed about 2500 lbs. I agreed that was too much!

The lady didn't even hesitate to load it up. I wish she had.

My '93 Civic weighs 2,265 lbs. If it was possible to hoist it in there, at least I know I can haul it if I absolutely have to! LOL.
