No Power On Startup

Recommended Posts

Ok, so starting sometime in July, when I started the truck up after it sat for more than a couple of hours it didn't really have any power. It took about 5-10 seconds of driving to get full power.

Fast forward to last week, and we got about 3 straight days of rain, and the problem got a lot worse. When I started the truck up, it would bog down and try to die unless I gave it more gas. It did that as well as the loss of power on startup thing until last Friday night, when it just crapped out on me, and wouldn't even start. So I think, ok, fuel pump's shot, replace it, should fix everything. I proceed to get the fuel pump replaced by a shop (and screwed in the process), and I get the truck back on Tuesday night. Drive home, runs fine. Then Wednesday morning, I start the truck up, idles fine, but as soon as I put it in drive and give it some gas, it bogs down and doesn't want to rev past about 1400 rpm. It takes about 1/4 mile to get full power.

It does it the worst in the morning on the first cold start, but it will do it every time I start the truck up, no matter how long it's been off for (sat for about 15 minutes at lunch today, and did the same thing when I started it up). I'll give it more and more gas, but it just doesn't want to rev up past 1400-1500 rpm. I know it's not the fuel pump, and the fuel filter was just replaced in August, and didn't affect the problem at all.

If anyone has any input at all, it would be GREATLY appreciated, as I want to get this worked out as soon as possible. Getting stranded and having to wait 3 hours for AAA really sucks. Thanks in advance!

According to what you are saying, I'd start by cleaning a few parts...specifically your Throttle Body and your Mass Air Flow sensor. All can be accomplished within a few minutes, and all you need is a can of Throttle Body cleaner.

Remove the air duct to the throttle body, and give the throttle body a good cleaning.

While you are at it, take the Mass Air Flow sensor off the intake duct, and clean that slao with the same spray. Spray the fine wire sensors, but don't poke at them or damage them.

Let everything dry out for a few minutes, and reassemble.

Carbon build up in the throttle body which affects performance, and dirt builds up on the MAF sensor wires, giving cruddy readings.

Report back to us when you have this done...let us know.

I cleaned the TB this summer (I think I used gumout). Would that work for the MAF sensor as well? I've also heard of using electrical contact cleaner on the MAF sensor.

Never use anything other then electronic contact cleaner (non-residue type) when cleaning the MAF.

Try the idle control valve. Without having it on the computer cant tell.

I have a can of "Radio Shack Electrical Contact Cleaner & Lubricant". Would that work? The Lubricant part on the label worries me a bit.

Well, I cleaned the MAF sensor, and the throttle body is spotless (just cleaned it 3 moths ago), and I still have the problem. Anyone else have any ideas?

I really would like to help ya, but I am 200% nooboo, but hey

check you battery make sure its good and providing 100% good powre all times

then check your spark plugs and make sure plugs recive good spark at correct time

then check your Air filter

then chekc your fuel pressure

then make sure fule injectors are clean, use Lucas injector cleaner - good stuff

then check your Cat converter, make sure its clean enough.

all that stuff almost you can use home tools....

oooh check your fuel filter too.

next big stuff like ECM module etc...but again I am nooboo :D

one more 2cents, check your Oxygen sensor, if its read grater than 9volts its no good, and if its read less than 1volt its no good either...

I have built this cicuit, so I can simulate my oxy sensors - before I buy them

1. What is a "nooboo"

2. 2000, do you have any SES lights? Any other symptoms? What is your fuel pressure at??

No lights of any kind. No other symptoms that I can think of. Truck is losing about a pint of coolant every 6 months, not sure if that could have anything to do with it... no idea about my fuel pressure. What would be the easiest way to check that?

Install a fuel pressure gage on the fuel rail. Do this after the truck sits overnight. Have a pal look at the fuel pressure gage when you turn the ignition "on" but don't start the engine.

Pressure should be a 60-65 psi and hold steady.
