Larger Tires...3 Questions

Recommended Posts

Posted

My truck is a 2001 Silverado 2500 D/A, with a current tire size of 245/75R16 size.

Some people suggest a 265/?? for filling the wheel-well visually and for improved handling.

1) Will this unduly confuse the engine's computer? I don't mind a speedo/odo variance, but do not want to harm the engine's "mapping".

2) Will a larger diameter tire help or harm the rear-end gear ratio...for a mostly highway/two-lane pavement truck?

3) Is handling or fuel economy affected?

THANKS!

Not enough size difference to be really noticed much. It will look better. You'll lose a tiny bit of acceleration but once again not much. Highway mileage should not change much if at all. Around town might drop a tiny bit. Your speedo will just be off by 2.3 miles at 60 (you'll be going 62.3 at an indicated 60). It takes a much larger size change to really cause much of a problem.

No big deal as far as your truck goes. If you like it ... do it!

20mm more sidewall height is not going to make much of a difference anywhere - spedo, performance, or for that matter filling in the fenders. Now if you were going to get bigger wheels and something more serious then you would need a re-program to the computers for the new wheel and tire combination. Consult a dealer to find out exactly which combinations can be programmed into the computer.

When going to a 265, the tread pattern of the new tire will have as much (or more) affect on milage then tire size... Believe it or not, a more aggressive tread will decrease your MPG's...

I had a 2001 6.0L HD and put 265/75/16 Michelin LTX/MS tires on it and saw no difference in MPG's. However the REVO's that I put on my '05 Dmax did result in lower MPG's over the stock rubber.

so your saying meatier thicker treaded tires will cause a decrease in fuel economy? I have Bridgestone Duelers and was looking to get some thicker treaded BFGoodrich tires when I get new tires in spring but I dont want to hurt my economy

I'm not interested in an aggressive tread, most of my miles are on the highway or two-lane. In fact, I'm probably gonna try the Firestone Transforce HT which is what my tire guy recommends. Pretty good price of $560 complete. Some of my buddies swear by the Michelin LTX MS, but they are WAY pricier, and in my guy's mind not worth the considerable cost difference.

I say go with 285s, crank your bars a bit. Its great. You do lose a small small amount of power down low. But, hey that gives you a good excuse to buy some mods. Plus it looks good.

With all that rubber and not so smooth rolling surface, that accounts for the extra drag and subsequently, lower mpg. But dang those beefy tires look good on a truck...even if the truck never does off road duty!

Those will fit fine no crank, but it does look better when the truck is level.....
