Fuel Pump Is Worrying Me

Recommended Posts

I have a 99 silverado NBS 4.8l. The fuel pump is RIDICULOUSLY loud. Louder than my cherry bomb extreme exhaust. I realize that it's still working but Im not sure how much longer I have. Anybody still running with thier pump this loud or should I be getting one in there ASAP?

If I were you, Id be prepared to replace it, but wouldnt replace it until it fails completely.

But dang, it must be pretty loud. Mine is almost as loud as my Magnaflow when idling.

How many miles are on it?

The sooner the better. All of a sudden, you'll go to start the truck and nothing. I had a '99, a '00, and an '01 and every one of them had fuel pump issues. I had quite a few fuel pumps go bad all combined.

Sitting at just under 144k and yeah, its LOUD

You can barely hear my exhaust at idle, standing a few feet behind the truck (and both pipes go straight back)

I guess Ill look into getting one soon. Im just not going to have much time untill christmas to replace it :-(

And Ill have to drive 13 hours on it to get home from where Im stationed. Stupid barracks and no workshop that I can park in (for free) and work on it.

I plan on going with an AC Delco pump, but does anybody know a good (reputable) place that I can buy one on the cheap?

Mine gets loud whenever the fuel is under 1/4 of a tank (which I never let it get). I'm with the other guy.. leave it alone until it fails. It might just have some trash in it that's makin it whine..

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought that waiting would help, but it only got louder over the past few months.

And I just found that rock auto website before I saw you typed it.

Which acd module goes to it? the rock auto shows MU1517

Look on the radiator shroud. It should say something like EVAP EMISSIONS REQ. Or RODUST FUEL SYTEM... etct etc. That will tell you which one you need.

This may sound crazy to you but I have spells with my Impala where the pump starts howling really bad. It's related to fuel quality and changes seasonally.

Found a quick fix is adding a tiny amount of diesel fuel conditioner that is designed to improve fuel lubricity. The stuff I use is a soy bio-diesel base stock (which is very slippery). Don't laugh...it works, pump is completely quiet on the stuff.

Robert,

What RogersBowtie said may not be a bad idea. I don't see where it could hurt anything.. and it MAY help.

I would call both of these places and compare prices. Have you VIN handy. I think they can look it up by VIN number. Also call your local dealer. Some of them will match prices from an online store. Some won't.
