Transmission Filters

I searched around here but all I could find is "to flush or drop the pan" results(or to flush or not to flush :P ). I will definitely replace the filter, but I wanted a general consensus on what brand did you go with and why. Or..just chime in on the pros and cons of a filter. So far I am leaning towards AcDelco or WIX based on quality and reputatuion of their products. I will NOT use FRAM for the same reasons.

Thanks for the input.

John,

There are a very few suppliers of Trans filters on the market. By far, SPX Filtran is the largest of the group and supply them to us (CARQUEST) and just about every other company out there. The biggest difference in filter kits is the gasket. ATP, Wix, NAPA, CARQUEST all choose what gasket they want to supply with the filter. We have been using a cork/rubber combo for some time that was an excellent gasket. You can crunch it into a ball in your hand and it will not crack. We have recently moved to a rubber design by FelPro. It is supposed to be the latest technology and the best out there. It will not shrink or spread out from under the pan as some of the less expensive rubber gaskets. It also has bolt holes which are slightly smaller than the bolts. This serves 2 functions. The smaller holes hold the bolts in place while you are putting the pan back up and the bolts hold the gasket in place as well.

You will not see them sold in many place under the name Filtran. They provide OEs and companies such as us under private name brands.

Here is a link to them. Filtran

Hope this helps you with your decision.

Thanks Trey,

The gasket was also a factor in my purchase. I do hate the cork ones ,due to the usual tearing and cracking. I also appreciate the "inside scoop" that you provide on suppliers, great info.

I usually purchase parts and what nots from Carquest for both :P . They provide quality products vs the other stores. Granted you gonna pay a tad more, but you get what you pay for.

...Now for the guys in the CP store, not too knowledgable, but its been quite a while since I been there.

Do you have the 60E tranny? I would suggest doing a N/A Corvette C5 transmission pan and filter (24208593 pan kit, 24208574 filter kit,...GM part numbers). This pan has a great sump configuration where you will never run the pump dry from sloshing the fluid around like when launching at a drag strip or off-roading in 4x4. The entire set-up will run you about $140.00 for everything and is a great inexpensive upgrade for when you change your fluid and filter. It adds like and extra qt. of fluid as well.
