Lcd Widescreen Displays

Okay fellas I decided to get a widescreen display. I'm looking between 20'' and 22'', but after doing some reading I find out there is a lot ot know. First of all there are three types of LCD panels (IPS, VA, TN) and apparently it makes a pretty big difference as to how good your display is.

What kinda monitors we got around here?

I'm looking at:

Samsung 216BW. 226CW (maybe)

Dell 2007PFW or whatever current 20 wide is.

HP w2007

I run the HP w19b and it is one hell of a sharp lcd. It's not as large as a 22, but the technology is very solid and it has low latency which is good for games.

I'm running a 1 yr+ old Dell 2405FPW and a 2 month old Samsung 245BW. I must say the Dell monitor has a much better angle of viewing and the colors seem more consistent across the overall screen. For most uses, you may not ever notice. But, I some times do photo editing, which - unfortunately - highlights some of the weaknesses of the Samsung monitor.

On the Dell monitor, the picture seems to look the same all over the screen. On the Samsung, 'blue' isn't quite the same shade in the middle vs. the corners of the screen. I can move myself around in front of the monitor and I can see the shading and tint change. That's no good when you're trying to fix the colors in a picture and you're not sure what d@mn color it's actually going to show-up as to everyone else.

I saved quite a bit of money by getting the Samsung to get my "dual 24's" setup running. But, I have to say I wish I had been a little more patient and spent the extra bucks and got another Dell 24 to go with it, instead of the Samsung. I'm not technically "disappointed" in the Samsung. It's just not as good as the year old monitor that's setting next to it, in my opinion...

I have no experience with the HP monitors. But, between the Samsung and the Dell, I'd probably lean towards the Dell, even if it means saving a little longer to get it... In the long-run, you'd probably be happier with it.

Go to Newegg.com and look at Viewsonic widescreen monitors.

I've had several Viewsonics and love em. (and currently use one) We have about 30 of them in our offices and no issues at all. Compared to our previous monitors, (Dell) they are hands down better quality. Awesome video too. I'd recommend a 22" at least if you want widescreen because smaller versions are not even as tall as a standard 17".

Here's a link for ya. NEWEGG.COM

I'm not knocking the Dells but we are MUCH happier with the Viewsonics.

Yea, I'd heard LOTS of really good things about Viewsonic. I'm not a chick I swear, but I'm also looking for a good looking monitor. So far looks go to the Samsung, then the HP. Thanks a lot guys, I've eliminated the Samsung 226BW because of the whole 'A', 'B', 'C' panal thing. Way to much risk in getting something I'm unhappy with.

For a second I thought you were going to put a widescreen LCD in your truck... I thought, "Well, that would be pretty cool."

haha, yea in a regular cab truck that would be something you'd see on Cribs.

(sorry.. just had to throw that in)

And now.... back to our topic.

My desktop has the HP it came with, 17", I like it, be nice if it was bigger though, I use the laptop more than desktop though so it doesn't matter.

I have that monitor and its the "C" which is supposedly the worst quality of the three. I've had it for about 6 months now and I haven't had any problems with it. I watch movies and play games with it without any problems.

I use the Samsung 226BW, 22", 3000:1 dynamic, 2ms response time, love it. Great for gaming.

Yep, very good for gaming.

At work I run a 20" HP, LP2065. It's very good with handling colors but there is sort of an overall haze on the screen itself. Takes a bit to get used to.

Which version do you have? Where you one of the lucky ones to snag an 'S' Panel? I'm curious to hear responses from people that ended up with the 'C' and 'A' panels because most of the reviews I've heard have been pretty poor. However, I did read about people with the knock off manufacture ones that worked out OK because people installed calibration software. Is that the boat you're in?

Very interesting. Did you install the calibration software? I was hoping that all the trouble was overblown. My buddy that works for HP tells me that ALL their displays are made buy outside contractors, two of which are makers of the 'A' and 'C' panel. So far I'm thinking the HP is the way to go though. I like the color reproduction better on it. I'd be sold on it already, if I could convince my friend to hook me up with the employee rate on it

Thanks a lot for the input fellas. Keep em comin'!

    • Great info here thank you. I just joined, we have a 2014 Silverado truck we bought about 4 years ago with less than 5,000 miles on it. It has approximately 24,000 on it now. It appears to have all the standard issues that people are talking about. Occasional charging problems especially using 110 volt, occasional blinking triangle where nothing will turn on when first starting the truck but it will reset itself if you wait 10 to 15 minutes. Noisy coupler between the flywheel and the generator. Our truck is speed limited to 74 mph, is there any way to change that? The latest issue we have been dealing with is when driving long distance on the highway at full speed the generator does not keep the batteries charged. The meter will go into the yellow/red border Zone for charge status and the yellow triangle will illuminate solid but the generator will not keep the battery charged, not sure why the controller doesn't tell the gas engine to increase RPM to increase generator output it usually stays well below 25 kilowatts even though the battery is discharging and I have to slow down the highway to 45 mph and eventually pull over and let the truck idle to charge the battery so I can continue driving at speed. Has anyone had this issue before or have any idea how to diagnosed it? When via Motors was around it they were very helpful at troubleshooting. This becomes much if the Terrain is hilly and you're towing a small trailer
    • I have the GMC accessory (REV) cover installed by dealer. Ordered with the truck.  They did a very good install job, can't find a single issue. Some water gets in around the tailgate but no where else.  You can see daylight around the tailgate but that's not the covers fault.  Installation is means everything. Guys at my dealer were seasoned pros, not inexperienced here today good tomorrow types, like many dealers employ for these jobs.   I don't mind paying for a professional job.
    • Like others have said, they will all leak. Mainly at the corners.   I have owned several and the best has been my current one. Revolver x4
    • About 8 months after an alignment job by the dealer I started experiencing a pretty significant clunk in the front end on hard left hand turns usually parking lot speeds almost at lock.  Occasionally get the same on hard rights too.   Discovered that the lower control arm attachment bolts are TTY and only to be used for a single use. And then I found some evidence of a TSB that indicates you can over torque those fasteners to about 130 foot pounds.   Asked a local shop to investigate and they found 3 out of four bolts loose and retorqued.   I've ordered the MOOG    K100421 lower control arm bolt kit that is completely reusable and not TTY.    Is the 80 ft pounds a realistic number?  Anyone have experience with those bolts?
    • subscribe to alldata.com, that will have gm's brake bleeding procedure.  and what you have to do likely varies, as if you just replaced a caliper and the MC didn't go dry, you most likely can just do a normal bleed on that corner, but if you disconnected lines at the MC or the abs unit, or let the MC run dry while doing work, you'll have to do a more extensive/complicated bleeding procedure.
