2005 Silverado Am Reception

I just bought a 2005 Silverado with onstar and xm. All reception is very good except AM. It is almost non working. Light reception of local station. The truck is still in warranty. Is this a simple fix with a swap or another radio type or antenna? I have remote controls on steering wheel. I have talk shows I like.

Here is some information that might help:

 

 

Radio Poor Reception

Schematic Reference: Radio/Audio System Schematics

 

Diagnostic System Check - Entertainment System

Always perform the Diagnostic System Check before proceeding with these diagnostic procedures. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle in Vehicle DTC Information.

 

Antenna System Test

Important: Always zero out the DMM before taking a resistance measurement in order to ensure an accurate reading.

 

 

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnect/Connect Procedure in Engine Electrical.
  2. Disconnect the antenna lead-in connector from the radio receiver.
  3. Measure the resistance from the negative battery cable to the coax outer conductor connector.
  4. The resistance measured should be 0.20 ohm or less.
  5. Test the following when the resistance is greater than 0.20 ohm.

    - Base of the antenna for a poor connection to body ground.

     

     

    - The coaxial cable interconnects for a poor connection or corrosion.

     

     

    - Test for an open or high resistance from the battery negative cable to the body. Refer to

    Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

     


  6. After finding and correcting the condition, operate the system in order to verify the repair.

Perform the Antenna Checking Procedures after confirming the integrity of the antenna ground.

 

Antenna Checking Procedures

Perform the following tests for the type of antenna on the vehicle.

 

 

Mast AntennasUnplug antenna lead-in connector from radio receiver and plug a test antenna into radio. Make sure antenna base is grounded to the vehicle chassis and keep hands off the mast.

 

Check radio reception in an area away from electrical interferences. Tune to several weak and strong AM and FM stations. If the radio reception improved, the problem exists with the antenna and/or lead-in cable. If the reception is still poor, refer to Audio System Troubleshooting Hints .

 

Important: Always zero out the DMM before taking a resistance measurement in order to ensure an accurate reading.

Refer to the table when testing the antenna and/or lead-in cable.

 

 

  1. Measure the resistance from the coax center conductor to antenna mast.
  2. Total resistance from end to end of center conductor:

    - RG-58/RG-59 type cable--less than 0.20 ohm

     

     

    - RG-62/RG-62M type cable--less than 3.5 ohm

     


  3. When checking the resistance, cautiously wiggle the lead-in tip and cable. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.
  4. Measure the resistance from the cable center conductor to metal case.
  5. Replace the antenna and/or lead-in cable when the above readings are not obtained.

Some vehicles come equipped with a pre-amplified AM/FM antenna that is powered by SW 12+. If the antenna loses this power source or a ground, poor reception can occur. To see if your vehicle is equipped with a pre-amplified antenna refer to Radio/Audio System Schematics .

    • Enjoy the new truck, it’s a beauty. I’m glad you’re keeping the OBS, I love those old trucks. 
    • With large equipment or deep mud it is more of a use the higher gear to avoid spinning tires, getting stuck because of spinning tires and doing damage to your machine. The idea is if you run out of torque before you spin tires you can still downshift for more torque. If you are just spinning your tires in the lowest available gear you are stuck and things break.   Automatic transmissions, traction control and electronic transfer cases change the calculation a little as you the driver have less control over each piece. 
    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death.
