Anybody know how big of a PITA is it to change the rotors and pads on these things?

Nobody knows??? Really?!?! Nobody has worked on the brakes for a 96?

It's not a PITA by any means, very straight forward, just follow your shop manual or get a good one (chilton or original GM shop manual etc.) and you shoudn't have a problem. I would STRONGLY suggest to you that you use OEM rotors as well as pads, much better then the aftermarket crap.

Since your post says 2WD, you will have some extra steps to remove the rotors. You will need to pry the dust cover off of the hub, remove the cotter key and nut and pull the rotor off. Be careful not to let the roller bearings fall out. While the rotors are off, check the bearings for rough spots and if they are OK repack the bearings. If you have never adjusted the bearings before, having someone over that has would be helpful. The nut needs to first be tightened until the rotor can't be turned. This will seat the bearings. Then you loosen the nut until the rotor spins very easily. Finially tighten the nut until just the slightest amount of drag is noticed while the rotor is spinning. You may have to slightly tighten the nut a little more to align the cotter pin holes. If you haven't checked the price of rotors yet, they are expensive since they have a gear cast in the back for the ABS sensor. Part store rotors for my 97 C1500 were about $100 each.

Thanks Guys! I was gonna help a neighbor do this and I couldn't remember if I had to pull the hub apart to change the rotors (I was hoping no) in those year models. Oah well no big deal just a few extra steps. Thanks again guys!!!
