97 Z71 - Wipers, Hvac, Radio, Power Windows Not Working?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help me out here? I have a 97 Chevy truck, and it has been sitting for a few weeks because im waiting to replace the ignition cylinder when i have some time. Well i went out to start it this afternoon, and noticed my wipers, hvac, radio, and power windows are not working???? Anyone have ANY idea why this may be the case? I check the fuses in the fuse box in the cab, and under the hood and all seem to be fine...Are these on the same relay or something? It's really frustrating me, and i'd just like some guidance in what to search for.

I appreciate any and all help you guys can lend me. Thanks a lot,

Did the motor crank at all? I'm not trying to be a smart@$, but is the battery dead?

Haha, didn't take it that way.. I should have specified. The truck starts and runs fine...Hell i drove it around the block, and the blinkers/headlights work, just the stuff listed doesn't. So no the battery is fine...Any other suggestions? d**n cars frustrate the hell out of me sometimes, haha!

(and just since this is my 2nd post here, im not a noob to cars/trucks...Been a tinkerer for almost 10 years now, but this one has me stumped)

It's a blowded fuse................ I bet your OBDII connector has no power either. Grab an Ohm meter and check each fuse for a completed circuit. I've done a visual on fuses, and have missed a blown one before.

Has this happened to you before? If so, do you have a clue which fuse may be the culprit? I'm just wondering why you suspect the OBDII connector doesn't have power either. It is interesting though, and i'll look into it! Thanks a lot!

If you have power on all the fuses the next thing you need to be checking is for chewed wires. this time of year little critters love to find places to hide and have a snack. if you have eny chewed wires let me know.... i know something that works really well to keep the critters.

Bryan,

You state you are waiting to replace the ignition cylinder.... "ALL" the circuits you mention that are "NOT" working, are "SWITCHED" circuits. They get power "ONLY" when the ignition switch is on.

If the switch is flaky... it may not be sending power to them. The bad ignition switch may be your only problem.

Interesting thought!!! I dont know why i didn't think of that...

Here's the thing though...If its just my ignition cylinder that is frozen (in the 'on' position...i can turn it to the 'start' position, but can't turn it backwards past the 'on' position) wouldn't the ignition switch still see it as on??

So you are saying I should get the ignition cylinder fixed and see if that takes care of the issue? If it doesn't, then it may be the ignition switch? Any idea how much the ignition switches run for these trucks???

Thanks a lot for your help...that was a very informative post, and really got my brain thinking

Bryan,

The cylinder has contacts on it that interface with the electrical system, inside the larger switch hosing. It will turn on and off all of the switched circuits. If one of the contacts is bad and not making contact as it should, the circuits don't ever get turned on.

The first thing I would replace is the cylinder. Obviously it needs replacing anyway.

"THEN" I would see what problems I still have. If any. You may get lucky and the cylinder is your only problem.

Jim thanks a ton for your input. Luckily im friends with a GM mechanic who is going to replace the cylinder for me...The d**n dealership doesn't sell cylinders with new keys, so that kind of sucks...But i truly appreciate your input, as this just had me for all sorts of loops.

Lucky for me i just purchased a set of GM Service Manuals for my truck, so in the future, i will track this thing down myself... :fume:

Glad to (hopefully) have been of some help. Let us know the outcome. It may help someone else later.
