'04 Sierra Denali Onstar Trouble

Ok, I took my truck to the dealership for some normal maintenance a few weeks ago. A few months ago I locked my keys in the truck....god d**n....and thought I was slick and called onstar for assistance. Well, low and behold it didn't work. I got to sit around and wait for a locksmith to unlock my truck. So, the truck is an '04, it is past its warranty, and the dealer says I need a VCIM and reprogram for my onstar to work. They said the part was about $200, which wasn't horrible...I'd have fixed it, but the labor to put it in was over $500. Now, to me that is a little crazy for something that for all I know hasn't worked in at least 3 years. I just canceled my subscription based on GM taking the last 3 weeks to attempt to get my information to pursue my SR #. I'm a level headed person that isn't looking for free stuff, but WTF? The lady from OnStar told me this is why they suggest pushing the button at least once a month to make sure it works. Is it just me or does that sound like a horrible sales pitch?

Does anyone have any similar stories with happy endings? Or advice?

I'm going to be looking for a new car for my fiance in the spring.... At this point, I can't say I'm looking GM again.

I'm going to go drink a beer and relax.
