Bed Rail Protectors From Dealership Vs Spray On

Guys, I need your help deciding on a couple of aftermarket accessories.

I'm awaiting my 2008 GMC Sierra 2500HD SLT as it is a factory order. In the meantime, I'm researching some after market options.

First, I'm debating which is the better rout for rail protectors - get the plastic ones from the dealership or when Line-X people spray in the bed liner, they can spray the railings. Which option is better?

Second, as mentioned above, I'm planning to have Line-X do the spray-in bedliner.

The last option, I'm thinking about installing ACI's Access Roll-Up Cover.

Sorry, I lied. Just remembered. I want to put in floor liner. Initially, I was thinking husky, but now I'm leaning towards WheatherTEch. Anyone has them in their truck? Any good or bad?

I hope this is not too many questions in one post.

I've had both styles of the LineX done and the under the rail with plastic liners looks a little better...I have GM rail protectors on mine and it looks pretty good. I would say it depends on if you put a lot of stuff on the rail...I do wish I had gotten the tailgate cover sprayed a bit higher as the plastic is pretty chewed up from rough objects sliding across it.

Thanks for the reply.

This truck is strictly for towing a travel trailer and as my daily commuter - it is not a working truck. So, I don't foresee much wear and tear on the truck as far as outside. Yes, we might load some things into the bed when going camping, but that's about it. Maybe getting something for the house once in a while - that's the extent of it.

Can't you do both? Get the line-x sprayed and then put the plastic covers on? I like the durability of Line-X, but prefer the look of the black rail covers, especially when you have the black wheel flairs.

the GM bed rail covers - are the stake holes covered / open .. if open are they supplied with stake hole cover caps ? - ya know , for that sleek sexy look .. :-))

From the picture, it looks like one piece - no wholes. It's a special order, so can't really tell. In either case, it looks like the holes are covered.

I believe those plastic rail protectors are glue on in which case you can't apply Line-X?

Mine use double sided tape, but why can't you put glue on Line-X?

That is what I thought. I thought there were 2 different ones. One with stake pockets and one without.

I thought you needed a smooth surface in order for it to stick? If you don't need to, than I could try as you suggested - do Line-X first, and then apply the plastic rail protectors. Please confirm.

I didn't know that you needed a smooth surface for them. I didn't install mine, but got them with the truck

As for the double-sided tape, the glue on the tape is failing (guess it has been on there for almost the life of the truck), so maybe this wouldn't be the best route, but I just figured that this is how they were all attached, and I just got a bad batch of glue. That is why, I asked the question about the glue being used on the rail protectors.

We put the plastic GM bed-rail protectors on my buddies truck the other day and there wasn't any room for play. We actually had to let them sit on a radiator inside the house for a while to let them expand so they would fit over both front and rear lips. I don't believe there would be any room for Line-X under them when installing.

I have GM rail protectors and the GM drop in bedliner on my new HD and I am happy with both. There was a time when i wanted a spray in bedliner but since I buy a new truck every 3 yrs. it is not cost efficient for me. The drop in liner is basically free since I get the GM commercial rebate. As for the floor liners. I have the weathertech floor liners and I'm not all that impressed with them. I had Fox weatherboots in my last two trucks and thought they were great. I wish I had spent the extra $20 and gotten them for this new body style. The weathertech ones don't fit the truck the way the Fox Weatherboots fit my old trucks.

Can you post a pic of the gm rail protectors. It is special order on my side of the border and from the little pic on the GM website it looks like it is a plastic strip that goes on top of the rail only - I would like to see how it looks. Vs. Wade - these fit over and around. Not sure which one looks better.

Here is a pic of Wade caps that seem to be nice. Does anyone put front caps on as well? I'm thinking might be useful with tonneau covers for added protection.
