Check/service Engine Light

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

The engine service light just came on and when I hooked up my scanner I recieved the following codes:

1) System too lean (Bank 1) P0171

2) System too lean (Bank 2) P0174

I was wondering if you guys can give me a few suggestions on what may be the cause.

BTW, I replaced the catalytic converter about a year and 1/2 ago. Also replaced all 4 O2 sensors (around the same time).

The truck has around 170,000 miles, it's a 5.3L V8. There's no rough idle or hesitation.

Try cleaning the throttle body first but it will probably end up being an intake gasket

OK will do, thanks

I have been working through the same problem for the past 3 months. I was told the intake manifold on my 2002 'burb was probably bad, but I used starting fluid (spray) all around the manifold when the engine was cold and there was no change in the idle speed, so I figured it could not be the intake. I cleaned the MAF and that helped, but cleaning the throttle body really did the trick and cleared the check engine light.

Cool glad it worked for you. On a side note it can be misleading if your spraying the intake and waiting for a swing in idle. I used to do that without my scanner to watch weather it went rich or lean. It only took getting burned one time, I sprayed and the pcm adjusted so fast I never noticed an uptick in the idle. Since then I watch my fuel trim while spraying.

Fuel filter, fuel pump, dirty MAF, and dirty injectors can all cause lean conditions. If your O2's are original, they may also need replacing.

You need a good data log on all your sensors with that high of mileage.

The O2 sensors are fairly new (under 2 years old).

The fuel filter is probably 2 years old.

Since I had the truck (2 years) I haven't clean or replaced the MAF

Same goes for fuel pump....which I really hope is not the cause

I noticed that the throttle 'sticks' a little when you first start pressing the gas peddle.

I guess I'll start by replacing the fuel filter and cleaning the throttle body. BTW, how difficult is cleaning the TB?

And as far as the MAF, should I attempt to clean it or just get a new one?

thanks again guys

p.s. *Just remembered* A while back I was told I had a very small leak in the exhaust manifold I believe. When I first start the engine you can hear a slight PFFFt Pffft type of sound, then after it warms up it goes away. But would an exhaust manifold leak cause a lean condition (And I was told this way before the light came on)?

Just take off the plastic air horn where it goes into the throttle body open the throttle all the way and spray some top engine cleaner or carb clean (I prefer top engine cleaner but the stuff is expensive and mine is free). If your plate is sticking you'll probably need to scrub with a tooth brush, do not use anything harsher than that you do not want to scratch it. As for an exhaust leak it can trick the o2 into thinking things are lean by introducing more oxygen into the system before the sensor but I think you said both banks are coming up lean so unless both sides leak its a no for you.

    • The oil filter has NOTHING To do with oil leak. GM sources parts from 1,000's of vendors and as with anything mass produced, flaws are unavoidable.    Putting a larger oil filter will do nothing but satisfy emotions. The OEM filter is designed for the engine and perfectly capable of handling the demands on the engine. Oversize oil filter could result in reduced flow and overall lower oil pressure.
    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
