Radio Replaced Under Warranty

Right before my truck went off of warranty in September, I had the radio replaced because of the buttons having the black worn off. In the middle of December, the front drivers speaker quit working, which also causes the warning chimes not to work. The weather was warm yesterday, so I pulled the radio to see if the dealer had not plugged the wiring harness in correctly. I noticed that the radio had a manufacture date of the middle of 2003 on it. I thought it was wierd that it was that old and was just now getting shipped out to a dealer. Then, I found a sticker on the side that said the radio was remanufactured, but was not dated.

I have a couple of questions about this:

1. Does Chevy use alot of remanufactured electronics for warranty work?

2. Could this radio have caused the speaker to fail?

I wouldn't be so sure that the speaker failed unless you have checked that it really is the speaker. Since you recieved a reman radio I wouldn't be surprised if the amp output for that speaker quite working.

Remanufactured does not necessarily mean inferior.

It is very common practice for automakers to have expensive electronic components refurbished and then reused as warranty replacements or even sold to the public. Warranty replacement requires that you receive an equal quality or better item to replace the defective one. There are several companies in Southern California that only refurb OEM electronics... This includes ECMs, Audio, etc. I'm sure the radio that came out of your truck is headed off to be rebuilt. Generally there are no real problems with them.

Considering the luck I have had with OEM speakers, I bet your speaker is dead. I bet you are shocked at how cheap they are when you pull it out... man, they couldn't have spent more than a dollar apiece on them new.

After the M/Y production ends there are no parts made for a vehicle and GM has contracts with rebuilders to do the rebuilding or upgrading products for them. Most times the rebuilt are better than the production because of newer & later design.

I guess I shouldn't have been suprised by the radio being remanufactured. This radio was built in the USA, but remanufactured in Mexico. I didn't have time to check the speaker to see if it was bad. If you adjust the radio to that speaker, you can hear it playing, but just barely.

I bet it's just a bad speker.
