On Going Distibuter Problems!

ok. so. long story short i keep grinding up my dist gear! yes it is the melonized gear. i dont know what the problem is! complete engine rebuild on a 02 silverado. new cam, new timeing gears, new dist, new bearings. all of it! but here i am yet again after 15k miles putting a new gear on my dist.

any ideas? something isnt lineing up perfectly, just my guess tho

First question would be is it a new distibuter? Was it in the engine before rebuild? If it was in engine before have seen them get bent and still looked ok but would eat up gear. Also have seen a aftermarket distibuter that was short and it would not fully seat in the cam gear but would hit the intake making you think everything is ok but it would wear out the gear. What brand cam, I have never heard of them causing a problem but their is a first time for everything.

I see this lots....was the heads or block milled ?.....aftermarket intake?......if no to all above chances are intake may have to be removed and factory OE gaskets installed

Exactly what I was about to post. But I was not sure if it possibly had a 4.3 or some older motor that someone had put in the truck.

it is a 4.3. for some reason chevorlet hasnt pulled there head outa thier ass and goten rid of it!

iv had problems with the distributer the whole life of the truck. with the factory intake gaskets, with aftermarket ones, i had the block checked, and the machine shop said it checked out.

the heads had a little warp to them, so they trued it all up. the cam is a comp cam. but i had probems before i put the cam in it.

the factory dist was chewed up, and about 3 aftermarket ones.

Is the cam walking in the block? Does it have the right plug in the rear of the block for the cam?

as far as i know it uses the factory plug and what not. this cam was supposed to be a computer controlled cam. the timing gear set that i put in it works fine. and the cams were identical to lenght and bearing spacing. i do remember that. put new lifters in it also.

what do you mean walking in the block?

some camshaft will move inside the block (walk)- best way to tell is to look at the timing cover for wear and the front of the block. Here is a site where this guy is building his engine and is using a button to prevent the walking of his cam

wow, well im not sure about that, i have a plastic cover. and timing gears. the gears would make it quite easy for the cam to walk.

the 4.3 has a gay balancing shaft. wich is gear drivin off the cam. with all gears in place, there was going to be gears running on each other. after some reading, i decided to cut off the teeth of that gear, reballance it, and use it as a spacer.

after some thought, the cam has a retainer plate that is bolted on the block. the cam cant walk the block.

any other ideas?

a billet cam with a iron dist. gear are not compatible, I do not know if it is billet, but a lot of a/m cams are are. a bronze dist gear is used with a billet cam.

oh snap! ok, so the factory called for a melonized dist gear, but i have a comp cam in my truck now, i assumed that it called for a melonized gear again. but i replaced it about 2 weeks ago, and now it is starting to miss and carry on again. aka gear is getting chewed up. will the wrong dist gear screw up my cam?
