Here is the Official Information:

GM Dealers:

a. Warranty Coverage Canadian Owners

The warranty issued by GM of Canada to purchasers in Canada applies to GM

vehicles registered and normally operated in Canada.

Effective September 1, 2002 all vehicles originally sold in Canada with an “in-service

date” on or after September 1, 2002, be owned for 6 months and have 12,000 kilometers

(7500 miles) on the odometer, before a GM dealer in the U.S. is authorized to

perform any warranty work except as provided in the additional information to follow.

Vehicles must also have the odometer converted by a GM authorized Electronic

Service Center.

Any warranty claims submitted by dealers for a vehicle originally sold in Canada

that has less than 6 months from the in-service date, has less than 12,000 kilometers

(7500 miles), and has not had an odometer conversion by an authorized service

center, will reject. (List of centers at the end of this section)

Exceptions to the above restrictions on performing warranty work are Canadian

owners touring in the U.S. or Canadian citizens relocating their residence to the U.S.

Dealer is to verify eligibility by checking GMVIS to determine the status of

serviceability. If the owner is a Canadian tourist, the Dealer must verify the

customer’s Canadian residency (i.e. Canadian driver’s license or Canadian vehicle

registration) and keep a copy of it in the Dealer’s files. Claims that fall under this

category should be “H” routed to the Area Service Manager for payment and

submitted in kilometers, and not miles.

GM Dealers in the U.S. are still authorized to perform any work required for the

completion of a recall, special coverage or customer satisfaction program, regardless

of the mileage or in-service date.

GM Dealers in the U.S. are authorized to perform warranty work on vehicles

originally sold in Canada if the vehicle has been in service for over 6 months and has

12,000 or more kilometers (7500 miles). REMINDER: If there is evidence that the

odometer has been disconnected, its reading altered, or the mileage can not be

determined, the vehicle may still not be eligible for warranty work as provided in

General Motors Service Policies and Procedures

7/06

Section 1.2.2.b of this Policies and Procedures Manual. Any odometer repairs or

replacements may only be performed by an approved GM source for the vehicle to

be eligible for warranty work. Any odometer repairs or replacements may only be

performed by an approved GM source for the vehicle to be eligible for warranty

work (list of ESCs can be found in Article 1.5.9) .

:tumbleweed: Man I really hate conspiracy (sp?) theory crap but is there a good reason for this policy. What possible reason would GM have for not wanting a US dealer doing warranty work till what amounts to a couple oil changes.

Might have something to do with the huge price difference and Gm (and every other manufacturer) restricting its american dealers from selling new vehicles to canadians.

I can see the restriction on sales and I could see a restriction on warranty based on the fact warranty costs are figured into the bottom line of what a vehicle costs. But why 7,500 miles that just doesn't really make any sense. So their worried someone might buy in Canada, drive a week, and leap across the boarder to complain about a headlamp leaking :D:tumbleweed: .

I bought my truck in Oregon and brought it back to Canada B.C. Took it to the dealership yesterday for transmission problems, hopefully they don't see its a u.s vehicle LOL
