Exhaust Fumes In Cab

Lately my 01 Sierra has had strong exhaust fumes in the drivers compartment while parked or at traffic stops. It seems to be much worse with the heater fan turned on, and I can't find any obvious leaks in the exhaust system itself. Could the fumes be getting sucked back in through the heater somehow? Any help would be appreciated-Thanks

You have an exhaust leak somewhere. Start at the manifold and work your way back. The fan is just pulling in outside air and when you are sitting still, the exhaust is lingering around the vehicle rather than being diluted and washed away by the passing air as it would while you were driving.

I haven't been able to find any leaks. I had a friend hold a hand over the tailpipe as I crawled underneath the truck, but couldn't hear or see anything. It only does it when the controls are not on recirculate. I wondered if it might have something to do with the vapor canister. Thanks for the reply-Dave

Daddy gave you good advice. If you can't find the leak, take it to a good muffler shop or other mechanical shop. There's most probably a leak somewhere up in the engine compartment area (likely the connection of the exhaust manifold to down pipe) that is allowing exhaust to fill the engine compartment and then is sucked up by the air inlet near the base of the windshiled. I can't believe you've let it go this long. Exhaust contains things you don't want to breath much of.
