Help: Did I Buy The Wrong Oil Filter?

Recommended Posts

Right now I'm in the middle of doing an oil change, and all the oil has drained out. I just realized I bought a AC Delco PF61 (longer). The stock oil filter was a PF48 (shorter). The diameter looks the same on both. Am I going to screw anything up if I put on the PF61? Does this one have the required check valve?

It's Sunday, so I'm trying to avoid a 30-mile round trip to PepBoys in my wife's car. Also trying to avoid any warranty issues.

Thanks!

As long as the diametre is the same and the threads are the same there should be no problem......most all filters have check valves...........you should be fine.

Same thing happened to me when I did my first oil change on the '07

My 6.0L has a PF48, and the filters my dealer sold me were the longer one which I thought great, bigger filter. The thread is different, and it won't fit.

I just wiped off the old one and put it back on and continued the oil change, with the intention to shange the filter later that week. Well it didn't leak, so I let it go 4,000 KM and then changed the oil and filter again.

When I took the filters back to the dealer the parts guy said no this is the right p/n. I said no it doesn't fit, got into a bit of an argument with him, then he went and talked to a mechanic in the back and came back out and exchanged them for the PF48's.

I have done 3 oil changes now and have just over 12,000 Km on the new truck since August.

Good luck.

The new filter should spin on very freely, otherwise it is the wrong one. Don't force the threads.

The last oil change cost me $65.00 at the dealer so I'll be doing the changes myself. What a rip off for $65.00

Thanks for the quick answer, Doug. I'll take your word that the threads are different. Plus, if I try it and get used motor oil on the threads they might not let me exchange it.

Headed to PepBoys!

Note to self: check the oil filter number before you start draining the oil! :)

Not really, with a filter and 6 1/2 quarts of synthetic oil just material will run you $50.
