2004 Silverado 1500 Ext Cab Short bed *independent front suspension

Just curiosity killing me here. I brought up my front end 1.5" with a Ready Lift leveling kit and threw some Rancho RSX shocks that were longer than stock on the front for the increase. Since the front suspension is now using 2 out of 3 factory methods that make up the IFS would installing a 1.5", 18 gauge grille and brush guard put too much stress on the front suspension?

No. That truck can handle the Weight with out the mods

I agree completely.

As long as you aren't adding a full "Front End Replacement" like one of those multi hundred monsters from Ranch Hand, you should be OK.

As you can see in my sig, I have the front end leveling kit (Ford T-bar keys) and a brush guard. I did replace my factory whimpy tow hooks with some heavy duty hooks even though I don't plan on getting stuck  . Your truck will have no problems supporting a regular grill guard.
