what would the tranny to lose third and fourth gears it has 187,xxx miles on iti think it was because the tranny fluid had not been changed before

Wear and tear on these trucks will do that. In my 99, it went out at 130,000 miles. I was pretty rough on it sometimes (farm truck...). Time for a rebuild!

your 3-4 clutch pack has worn out ,you can go in and change that pack only or build the whole thing ,I have a spare tranny and mine went last friday,my repair cost $ 10. for oil,but i did it my self.common failure for 4l60e
