Top To Bottom Play In Front Drivers Side Wheel

I have a vibration coming from the front drivers side wheel, so I jacked the truck up, and started wiggling the wheel around. It has a significant amount of 12-6 play (grabbed it at top and bottom, and wiggled it). I initially thought balljoint, but I jacked it up again today to take a closer look, and the wheel is moving independent of the knuckle, so it can't be a balljoint (yes, the lugs are tight). Where else could this play be coming from? Wheel bearing? Thanks :rollin:

 

 

 

On a side note, I found something else that worries me. Something (the wheel) has been rubbing on a brake line, and is starting to wear it away! Sorry for the crappy pics, They're fom my phone.

Sometime just wiggling does not isolate a ball joint. What I usually do is jack up the truck and get my big prybar and wedge it in the knuckle and force the upper or lower a arm. If there is any movement its the ball joint.

Wheel bearings usually make a wirring sound,especially in turning, when they are going out. It could also be the a arm bushings going bad.

Seeing you have a 4X4 it is may be the hub assembly, most likely cause. Have you noticed any play in the steering? Any uneven wear in the tires?

 

From the pics the brak line looks like it is run correctly....dunno

No uneven tire wear. The play is occuring somewhere between the wheel, and before the knuckle, so it couldn't be an a-arm bushing. How involved would replacing the hub assembly be?

wheel bearing, do em all the time. wiggle it up and down and watch the knuckle. it shouldnt move a bit but you wheel will still be movin up and down. thats a bearing. side to side would be tie rod ends/ idler/pitman arms etc etc

 

replacing a hub is easy as pie

Yah its sounds like it on its way out.

 

Its not hard to do, I can knowck both out in the driveway in a hour or two. Thats if everything is not all rusting to hell.

I would invest in a manual, either chilton or haynes.

Pretty much its a 36mm (id have to go double check)axle nut followed by the hub assembly nuts.

Cool thanks guys. I already have a Haynes, looks like I have some reading to do while I eat dinner. Boy am I glad this isn't a ball joint...

 

Ok, now I got a stupid question: I wouldn't need an alignment after doing this, would I?

Technically you don't need to do an alignment after replacing the bearing / hub assy. Might not be a bad idea to get one in the near future though.

Ok, so I have all the bolts removed, the axle nut is off, and the axle splines will slide in the hub. But the whole thing is rusted/seized to the knuckle. :lol: The Haynes book said to hit it with a hammer if it didn't come off, so I hit it quite a few times with a hamer, sprayed it with some WD40, hit it some more, sprayed it again, went to Sears to replace the 18mm socket that broke, tried to get it off again, and hit it a few more times. I just drenched it in WD40, and I'm going to let it sit over night, and try to get it off tomorrow. Anybody have any tips on getting the durn thing off? :lol:

Knock the Shiite out of it. Make sure you hit the part you are replacing. It will eventually break free. There isn't a lot of the knuckle for it to stick to.

 

EDIT: I'm sure this is obvious but... make sure you have all of the bolts out of it. THEN knock the SHIITE out of it.

Yeah, I checked for extra bolts a few times. I'll probably end up checking about 10 more times too :crackup: And I have hit it pretty hard. Maybe it's time to step up to the sledgehammer... :cheers:

How did this come out???

 

 

Well, after much beating with a sledgehammer (technically it was a maul, but whatever) I got the old one out, cleaned off as much of the rust as I could, greased the hell out of everything, and the new hub went in without any problems. So I'm all happy, and I take it out for a test drive, and as soon as I get up to 60mph, there's the vibration again, but not as pronounced. I was thinking that maybe driving about 2k with the bad bearing might've worn the tire a little funny, so today I rotated the tires, and the vibration is even less noticeable now, and it followed the tire to the rear of the truck. So either I was right and the tire is worn a little funny, or I have a bad tire. I think, and hope that it's just worn weird. Time will tell I guess.

My truck is a 2023 GMC 1500, I have looked heavily into the AI boxes but I consistently find common complaints with lag.    Does carplay auto open now that you have it set up when you get in truck and turn it on? Or do you have to do open the app everytime?

    • It added a cost layer to an already limited production supply. True that. 
    • Swap costs and supply/demand balance. When a barrel comes out of the ground the entire range of products are present but not all at the same percentage.    Breakdown of Refined Products The following table summarizes the approximate output from a standard 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: Product Type Gallons per Barrel Percentage of Total Gasoline 20 gallons 45% Diesel Fuel 9 gallons 21% Other Products 13 gallons 31%   Most of that diesel figure is 'straight run' or cut from the barrel. Gasoline 'cut from the barrel runs 0 to 20% at the crude. So in the crude unit there is more diesel the gasoline, usually.  The full refining experience however gives the tabled values. Ego there is half the diesel than gasoline after the 'first crack' That could be an FCC unit, or Isomax or....   Those units take heavy products and break the big ones into little ones. Those numbers are harder to get hold of but directionally it ends up the same.    Really light products are very profitable. Ethylene and Propylene to name two. Those are cracked from slightly heavier feeds like NG and Propane and Ethane. The cracker harshness determines the feed for distillation. Those feeds come from less profitable products like diesel and gasoline.    So...there is a swap cost. How much market is there TODAY and what crude am I running TODAY..... what is my process capable of always.    There is this as well. The USA uses allot more gasoline than it does diesel so in the cracker the process is tilted to gasoline production which....limits supply of diesel. OTR uses the most and it has different requirements than automotive and agricultural.  Limiting auto products.    You are correct however. It is less refined, just less of it. Allot less. 
    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.
