14 Bolt 6 Lug

I am looking to buy a GM 14 bolt 6 lug 4x4 rear from a junkyard to replace my 10 bolt in my 1998 K1500. How can I tell the difference between a 2wd and a 4wd rearend? Are there any distinct differences, so I can be sure? Also, what is the best way to determine the gear ratio? I have been told that it must match my front axle ratio.

Thanks

I think that the distinct difference between the 14 bolt 4X4 and 2WD is that the 2WD is narrow and I think that a 4X4 drive shaft will not hook up.

If you are looking at a 14 bolt that is 6 lug it is most likely a 3.73 but those axle shafts you could switch out with an 8 lug. The only other more accurate way of telling for sure about the gearing is to take off the differential cover and count the splines should be like 33. As opposed to 4.10 I think is 30 spline which has a unique pitch. If your parts card in your glove box reads GT4 you got 3.73.

Hope this helps. I am still learning about this stuff to so let me know if I have steered you wrong!
