95 Jimmy Trans Problem

My 95 jimmy has developed a shifting problem. First start of the day it shifts hard into reverse and into drive. By hard I mean it kind of slams into gear. From there it shifts through the gears and into OD fine. After the first stop sign it is taking off in 2nd gear. I've tried shifting into low but it still takes off in 2nd, and goes through the gears fine after I shift to OD. The only time I have first gear is the first drive of the day. Any help would be appreciated.

Just an update and clarification. After further review I'm actually taking off in 3rd unless I manually shift to 2nd, even if I shift to L it takes off in 2nd. Also in OD it will not go to lock- up mode. I don't have any mil or service engine lights. Could this be the safe mode? If so does anyone have any idea what is causing this. PLEASE HELP!! I'm trying to avoid a trip to the trans shop. THANKS!
