Hi-temp Sillcone On Headers And Exhaust

Going with Gibson headers and single exhaust. Wondering if people needed the added sealing of the Hi-temp goop in addition to the gaskets.

Hi-temp RTV runs around 650 degrees. Red-hot exhaust is a bit higher.

RTV will burn off of the header flanges and gaskets. You run the risk of it deteriorating unevenly and causing a leak. Header gaskets and flange gaskets are designed to seal without goop.

 

I wouldn't use it. You did ask!

Something else to keep in mind is that regular RTV will give off vapors of silicon dioxide at high temps which will coat and ruin the O2 sensors. A special "sensor friendly" RTV is available at auto parts stores which will not do that. I have used the high temp "sensor friendly" RTV (copper colored) at the collector (far) end of my JBA headers with mixed success. It holds up to the heat OK but because of the special formulation it is much softer and weaker than regular RTV.

Thanks for the feedback... I am aware of how hot combustion temp's can be....

 

I've always used it connecting the pipes to snowmobile engines, and it works good, yes, 100 MM from the piston skirt temps do reach 1400 degrees F. Never had a problem with the rtv holding up though. I also do understand the emissions that it would give off. That would suck.
