99 Sanoma Overheating

My friend has a 1999 GMC Sanoma 4.3L and he's been telling me the needle's been going above normal on his temperature guage and he seems to think it's a thermostatbut he had it replaced last January along with new hoses and a water pump and it seems pretty soon to need it replaced again. I havn't got a good look under his engine yet but today I told him to add some water coolant and he said it helped and I told him I'd help him fix it but I'm not familiar with these trucks so should we go ahead and replace the thermostat or just flush the radiator?

You might have a bad intake gasket if its using water.
