How Do I Remove The Steering Wheel On An 07 Classic?

I won an OEM leather steering wheel on ebay a few weeks ago to replace the factory crappy plastic one and was wondering what steps I should take removing it, since I've never removed a wheel with an airbag in it? I've tried to pull on the center/horn part and it acts like something's holding it on, although I don't see any screws behind it? I should probably also disconnect the battery, right? Thanks, Jason

I'm not sure. I've heard it can be dangerous. I think you can set the air bag off if not careful.

holly crap man..your playing with a air bag that can break your neck

get a manual and read carefully or let the pros do it....rule number 1 is the battery have to be disconnected at least a half hour to de-energise the bag before you can even look at it

I bought a Haynes manual the other night. I'm gonna try to get it done this weekend, without snapping my head off.... :dunno:

Definately disconnect the battery. You dont wanna end up with a broken nose/arm/anything else.

And i wont go into a rant on something that annoys me in the first few words of your sentence.

Good luck swapping that out.

Or, if your really worried about the airbag going off in your face, you could takea a knife and stab the middle of the stearing wheel :dunno:

Probably that you used the word "won". When I "win" something off eBay, I really don't consider it winning at all, but I'm paying money to get something - So I'm buying it.

That would be my guess. Doesn't annoy me though. If you'd like to consider your purchase a win, I'm with you.

BTW, good luck with your install. I wrapped my wheel with a Wheelskin, Looks, pretty good, if I do say so myself.

Thats exactly it. Good call. I cant stand those retarded ebay commercials. Just that if i "win" something it better d**n well be free. You can call it what you want. To each there own.

But like i said before, good luck with the steering wheel, and make sure that airbag is disabled before you start yanking.

I've replaced turn signal stalks on two previous cars, both req'd the airbag removed. Just disconnect the battery, wait a while, and wear clothing that does not create static elec. (like the wind pants I'm wearing right now). Ground yourself and touch something metal before handling the bag/charge, and hold it away from your face. When you set it down, place the bag up, so if it did pop, it won't launch off the ground and become a missile. You just have to respect it, like guns I guess. They're safe as long as you handle them correctly.

Thanks so far guys. I've been reading in the manual and it says disconnect the bat, and remove the SRS fuse behind the interior fuse cover on the left of the dash. Only one problem, there isn't an airbag/SRS fuse in that fuse panel. So, I removed the Airbag fuse (15) in the box under the hood, since it's the only fuse I could find with the words SRS or airbag on them. Anyway, does anyone have the fuse in the interior box? I've got to remove my headliner for another project first, so maybe someone will chime in by the time I get back in here about the fuse?

It wasn't anywhere as bad as all of you were talking.... After I read the steps in the book a couple times and finally figured out how to removed the center piece, it was cake. Although, Autozone gave me a screwed up wheel puller that didn't have bolts big enough to screw into the wheel, so I improvised. Anyway, got it all switched over without any broken limbs or exploding airbags.
