Flowmaster Exhaust?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I have a 2002 2500HD. The stock pipe is 3.5inches.

The cost for a cat-back system with a flowmaster muffler would cost $1200. Thats a 4inch pipe from the catalytic converter all the way to the tip.

I can go the economically route and install a flowmaster muffler and then have a 4 inch pipe exit the muffler to the tip for $150.

Any advantages or disadvantages? I'm looking for a deeper/louder sound and maybe a little more power. I know a muffler will not provide more power.

Thanks.

wherever you got quoted for a $1200 Flowmaster system, & with 4" pipes.... are a big f'n rip off & trying to f you over real bad... 4" is way too big for a gasoline engine. 3" at max. Your truck already has 3" dual pipes with no Y pipe connection. So buy two mufflers of your choice, and tips if you want, and go to the shop & have them run the tailpipes. That will be a little over $300 all in all.

I went with 3" single in/out Flowmaster Super 44 mufflers ( the best they make ) $165

Magnaflow 4"x12" rolled Stainless Steel tips $70

shop install & running 3" tailpipes 45'd behind wheels $106

your stick setup now ( if stock ) is 3" dual pipes into a factory dual in/out muffler, them mated to a 3.5" tailpipe.

Thanks for the detailed information.

I ended up getting a Flowmaster 50 series, dual in and single out with a chrome tip. Total cost was $300.

$160 for muffler

$80 for the 3inch tailpipe

$60 for chrome tip

However, it doesn't sound very loud. I have 37inch Nitto Mudd Grappler tires and they drown out the sound of the exhaust, which isn't very loud even in idle.

Should i have gone with the 40 series Flowmaster? is the sound much louder? I heard the 40 series was the loudest they make.

thanks.

FWIW, I have the same set-up as you. Mine was real quiet at first, but then got louder as I used it more. Now it has a soft rumble at idle and a medium-loud throaty rumble at acceleration and down shifts. It is not obnoxiously loud like some, but won't kill your eardrums on highway runs either. It is very antagonizing when the cabin drone is like finger nails on a chalk board. That loud-a$$ exhaust was cool when I was a kid, but now low and mello is what turns my crank.

Just give it a little time, and you will like it more. It won't be totally different like the old glass-packs used to be, but it does open up some.

If you wanted louder, a buddy of mine went with dual Thrush mufflers for like $30 a pc. and they sound awesome too, but are noisy when you throttle her up! Yeah, I said Thrush. The old company is making a chambered exhaust that rivals Flowmaster!

Yeah 50 series isn't too loud of a muffler, just helps give it that more low rumbling sound. But yes give it time, after 1,000 miles or so it will break in & be used to the system and sound much clearer & louder. But if you wanna be heard a half mile away & let the neighbors know your trucks idling then 40 series, or super 44 will do. I would say go super 44 because its not a restrictive muffler, and 40 series is loaded with baffle plates which will rob a little low end & economy. Super 44 gives you that real deep tone & straight pipe rev which is what i like.

Thanks for all the great information.

Update:

I bit the bullet and went back to the shop and gave them another $110 for them to swap out the 50 series muffler with the 40 series muffler.

The difference is night and day. The 40 series is amazingly loud. I can hear the exhaust over the 37in Nitto Mudd Grappler tires now.

SO now i a almost brand new 50 series muffler. Used one day for about 40 miles. Let me know if any of you are interested in buying it. I'll let it go for cheap.

Thanks

d**n i must of got ripped off i paid 550 for a 40 series with 1in and 2out with 2 tips. i wanted a true dual setup but they talked me out of it somehow saying it would be really loud and i would get tickets and it would also void my emissions warrenty because if where they would have to cut it. i wish i did go the other route but i guess it is better off like this so i dont piss off everyone on my street at 7 in the morning pulling out at 50mph cuz i live on a highway.

Yeah you all got majorly ripped. I paid $270 for install of my Super 44 + the stainless steel camaro style tip..and thats including tax. If you want loud, go with the Super 44.

They put on a dual in and single out 40 serires flowmaster muffler. It sounds great.

I wish I would have went with the 40 series in the first place, but I read of the the posts here and people were complaining that it was too loud, etc.

Thanks again for all of the info. This is a great place for chevy lovers.

Yes, it is dual in and single out. The guy told me that the factory is dual in and dual out to a 2.5inch "Y" to a single 3inch tailpipe. The "Y" was restrictive. What I have is a 3 inch out the tailpipe, so its less restrictive.

Total Cost:

$160 - 50 series muffler

$80 - tailpipe and labor

$60 - chrome slant tip.

total = $300 out the door

Then I changed to the 40 series and it cost me $110

so total cost = $410 (ouch)....$110 mistake...should have went with the 40 series.

If anybody reading this wants a lot of sound, go with the 40 series. the 50 series s*ucks. Don't let people scare you into getting the 50 series because the 40 series is too loud. it can never be too loud. There will always be somebody louder. :shakehead:

i went to a custom exhaust shop and got a true dual setup, with 40 series flows and 3 in pipes , cat back, 4 inch tips. this thing sounds mean coming down the road. if you want to turn some heads with a 6.0L, go with the 40 series.

I have the American thunder system by Flowmaster on my '03 ECSB with the 8.1/ Allison. I bought it from Summit Racing and it was around $325. It is a decent system but is a little drony at certain speeds. Between 55 and 65 mph the cab resonates, but above that it quiets down . It is a nice sound ,but is on the edge of being annoying for some. I like it most the time but there are times I could do without it. I feel there was a slight performance gain. I mainly installed it because the factory muffler was breaking up inside and GM wanted $1200 + just for the parts. This system on a 6.0 requires another resonator to go on the one bank. Appearently without the extra pieces the system is unbearable when used on the six litre.

I sure would like to hear the 8.1 with dual Flowmaster. Do you have a sound clip by any chance?
