Manifold Gasket Help

Hey guys,

 

I have a 2002 chevy 2500hd with 8.1 engine.

 

There is a leak on the manifold and the coolant is slow dripping into the 2nd spark plug on the left side of the engine.

 

The mechanic said it would cost about $160 to fix the gasket.

 

But when I went to look for the gasket to "do it myself" i notice there is an exhaust manifold gasket and intake manifold gasket. Intake gasker = $100....exhaust gaskete = $10.

 

I'm not sure which gasket it is. Does anybody know or have a schematic they can send me?

 

If coolant is leaking out of it, does it automatically mean its the intake gasket?

Neither one of those gaskets seal off any coolant passages. So your mechanic is wrong. The 8.1 is a dry intake manifold and only some boat engines have water cooled exhaust manifolds so that's not it either. If your leak is on the outside of the engine and you mean left as in drivers side which is correct then look at the round steel plug screwed into the cylinder head above the second spark plug, this is the coolant temperature sensor location on the passenger side head but it's just plugged off on the drivers side and chances are good that plug has developed a leak. If this is the case to reseal it you will need to drain the coolant from the drain at the bottom left corner of the radiator. Then use the proper tool to engauge the leaking plug and uscrew it. Then clean the threads with a small metal brush. Then wrap the plug three times with Teflon pipe sealing tape and reinstall it. Close your radiator drain and refill it. Then start the engine and top off the coolant as needed. Reinstall the cap and drive it a few miles then come back and check it for leaks with the engine still running.

Hi Vernon, thanks for replying to my post. Actually, the fluid leak is on the passenger side of the engine. Just right above the spark plug. It is a slow leak and you can see the "corrosiion" of the fluid build up into a crusty material. This is also the same spot where there seems to be a squeeky knock when I give the engine some gas. I am think this leak is causing the spark plug or the piston inside to make this noise.

Hi Vernon,

 

I believe you are right on the money. The leak is on the passenger side of the engine block. The is some sort of screw type sensor and it is leaking right onto the spark plug. Please pictures and confirm your diagnostics. You are the man. Thanks.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.

Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
