Big Problem Here...

So I'm changing the oil today at approx 500 miles for the engine break in. Everything is going well and I get everything buttoned up and some new oil in. I start the truck up and watch the oil light as it goes off like normal. Then the oil light comes back on and I get a low psi warning. I immediately shut off the truck and get out. Oil all over the ground! I lookk up under the truck and it's coming from the filter. I take the filter off and see that the other filters gasket had been stuck to the oil pan so it never came off. It was good enough to seal it until the truck started up apparently. Please tell me I should be ok and didn't do any damage to the engine!!! The wife isn't home so I can't go to the store to get more oil and I am soo nervous about starting it back up.

You're fine. Sounds like the truck only ran for 15-20 seconds then you shut it off. Clean off the old filter gasket, put a new filter on, fill 'er up with oil and away you go.

Yeah truck was only on really briefly... 20 seconds at the most.

20 seconds??? truck is JUNK, I'll give ya 10 grand for it.

lol... I still won't be at ease until I can get it started back up.

That's too bad Erin. The good news is that your truck will be absolutely fine, and the biggest problem is the mess that you'll have to clean up  There's a good lesson here though: always make sure you're getting a good seal on the filter. What I usually do is take a shop towel or old rag and dip it in some oil. Then wipe it around the gasket on the new filter as well as the area on the truck where the gasket seals. Not only does this clean any debris up that may be there, but it also lubricates the area and ensures a good seal.

It didn't even run 15-20 secs with low oil pressure if he shut'r down after one of the gaskets blew out and got the warning. Might even have had a little pressure when it was squirting oil out. No sweat.

$10,100 and thats my final offer! The truck is AOK! That is something to always be weary of when changing the filter. Believe me, you are not the only person to have that issue with the rubber gasket not coming off the filter housing.

Agreed, I do the same thing (but use my finger to wipe oil around the gasket). I will be more cautious from now on that the old gasket does come off though, I usually don't even check until I'm all done and am cleaning up the garage.

Yeah I did the same thing, wiped down the new gasket with some oil. I just forgot to check the old filter to make sure the old gasket came off as well. BTW... I can't believe some people don't change their oil soon after buying the vehicle. The oil that came out of the filter was full of sludge metal.

Yeah, it's not time to break out the Slick 50 or Zmax and the garden hose just yet!!

I had a ford 460 oil pump quit. Oil light did not work. Drove truck 1.5 miles. Thought engine was burned up and disassembled. Not a speck of damage to anything in the motor. Completely surprised me. Replaced oil pump shaft (broken) and drove another 20 thousand miles until I sold it.
