5.3 Or 6.0?

Well,

I am hoping to be buying a new Sierra or Silverado soon, 03-04 some where in there depending on the price.

I was wondering what I should get, a 5.3 or the 6.0L Is there that much difference in the HP ratings? I think it's something like 30 hp? Not sure though on this one.

But most of the trucks which have the 6L are 3/4 versus a 1/2 ton. There are a few 6L half tons, but they are the HD versions and seem to be quite a bit more expensive. Will I see a difference in driving a 3/4 ton versus a 1/2? Should I get the 6L or 5.3, also is any of these more fuel efficient, I am guessing 5.3, but how much worse is the 6. if that is the case.

3/4 ton will i notice the weight difference? Im not sure if I need 3/4 I just need 1/2 I think. Some basic lifts, 6-8 and some bigger tires. I would like the HD version though because of heavy duty parts.

Also how long do these trucks last I found a few with a bit more millage but more options that I want like the interior and crew cab.

Inaways sorry for the ramble. I searched for something like this but didn't find anything, maybe I needed to search something else. But my options are:

Probably 1/2 HD. or 3/4 or 3/4HD.

Crew hopefully.

Will I like the 5.3 or 6L better I do enjoy power and am leaning towards the 6, but if it affects gas millage harshly also due to the size I don't think it's worth the extra $$$

The motor choice depends entirely on your application. It appears that money is a concern, both for buying and then feeding the beast on a daily basis.

For a normal use application with limited/light towing, the 5.3L w/ 3.73 diff moves my truck down the road just fine. The 4.3 V-6 in my old truck performed fine too for my needs. Throw in a lift, larger tires, added weight of an HD or 3/4 ton, etc... you can then forget about fuel economy with either motor. This eventually becomes a question of priorities. Believe you need to ask yourself if the truck toy is worth the financial sacrifice. I enjoy my '07 Silverado but at $3+/gal for gas, it spends most of it's time locked in the garage.

Well, I think I will got with the 6L if it isn't that bad. My current truck is already horrible. Heh so no changes there. But how much extra weight does the HD package add on? Or should I just Upgrade to the 3/4 ton. The 1/2 hd's seem to be a bit more expensive too.

If money is a concern and you don't need the capabilities of the HD then I would just get a 1500 with the 5.3. It is a fine motor and it get's pretty good FE.

But if you want the bigger truck get it. It's all about what you want and need.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
