Quick Wheel Help

quick question, looking around for new wheels and i saw the option for hub centric yes or no? i going to assume i want hub centric wheels since i have 4wd? just double checking before i place an order. thanks for the help

 

EDIT: also, my wheels are 6 x 5.5 right? on one site its that, and on another it said 6 x 139.7 probably the same measurements just ones inches and ones not, but are both of those correct?

It would be desireable to have hubcentric wheels no mater what the number of drive axles. The OEMs are. The centering and the weight bearing is best done on the hub rather than the lugs.

Your truck is not hub centric. It is lug centric. Not sure if YOU could make it hub centric, I doubt it. Isn't this why our lugs and lug holes are tapered. The tolerance between the hub and wheel is too great to be hub centric. Less I know them backwards. My '55 is what I believe to be hubcentric, and my newer vehicles are lug centric. The '55 has a machined lip on the hub that matches perfectly to ther center hole of the wheel. Its lugnuts just hold it tight to the face of the hub. (This is hubcentric, no?)

I'm may be the one that is confused, but I have the same wheels as pictured in your sig and the center bore of the wheel is nearly a bump fit to the hub/rotor. If it were lug-centric, why is there no play in the wheel bore? There are many aftermarket wheels that for the sake of universal fit, have very large bores and are in fact centered on the bolt circle. These are wheels that by design, should be balanced with jigs that fit the lugs and center the wheel within the bolt circle just as it is when it supports the vehicle after installation. If the center bore is eccentric to the bolt circle, a cone-centered balance will be inaccurate when mounted on the vehicle. A good example of this is the Oldsmobile Super Stock wheels of the '80s that suffered from sloppy die strike and the center bore was all over the place.

 

The reason IMO, that the lugs are tapered is to allow the same lugs to be used with either thin steel wheels like the spare and thicker cast alloys. A shank-style lugnut would not tighten up on a steel wheel.

It fits tight to the hub center bore, but not as tight and cleanly as a hub centric should. The reason why the lugs are taperd is to center each lug nut hole on the stud, 5 points to center the wheel rather than 1. I think that is the benefit to lug centric.

Tapering keeps the wheel stud from rubbing against the side of a lug hole in the wheel. The use of a taper seat and hub piloting is not mutually exclusive. The use of thrust washer type lugs without hub centering is not safely achievable and are not found together.

 

Most all current Ford F series wheels use thrust washers and hubcentric wheels. GM wheel bores are also VERY snug and weight bearing. The secondary purpose of the lugs on GMTs is weight bearing.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
