Hello, I am having a problem with my 4.3l 2005 1500. I bought the truck about 6 months ago(20k miles). I have had 3 oil changes done, all from different shops. The problem is that after each oil change the oil reads about 3/4" to 1" above the max on the dipstick. I asked the shop and they say they put the recommended amount of oil in. I decided to change the oil myself to know for sure. The owners manual says 4.5 qts. with filter. I changed the oil and filter today. Level ground and oil drained for 30 min. hot. I put in 4 qts. ran engine up to operating temp then let sit for 30 min. The dipstick reads almost to max, around 80% of the crosshatch area. It looks like 4.5 to 5qts will put me at 3/4" to 1" over max fill. Does anyboby else have the same issue? I dont think I have a sludge problem at 20k miles(I hope not). Is this a inherit condition of the 4.3l engines or am I worrying too much. Thanks

I would not worry too much. Do oil changes as recommended and put in 4 qts. If your oil pressure reads fine and the engine sounds good, I expect you have nothing to worry about. Anyway, other than the odd oil leak, these engine are very good. I have seen several with 400,000+ KMS and still going strong.
