Oil Question

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

I have used synthetic oils and we all feel that they provide greater wear protection. My question is simply this, Has anyone actually seen a worn out engine on any vehicle at any mileage? I have not. I have seen damaged engines from blown hose overheating but have never seen a properly designed engine wear out.

How many people have actually seen an engine "wear out"?

Never?

I've seen tons. The SBC's from the mid 80's used to wear all the lobes off the cams. When the bore starts to go oval, the engine is wearing out.

Typcally, a lot of issues come from cold temps (or extreme hot temps). That dino oil is like sludge when it's cold and water when really hot, so I stick to full synthetic once its broken in.

I definitely remember the bumps wearing off the cams but this is a design/manufacturing issue. I have seen many sbc engines with 200 thousand miles of heavy use with bore honing marks still visible at overhaul caused by overtemp.
