Condition

Some customers may comment that the vehicle has a hesitation or lack of performance. They may also comment that it is difficult to obtain transmission downshifts. These conditions may be more pronounced when operating during high ambient temperature.

 

Cause

Causes that can contribute to these conditions include:

 

 

• High intake air temperatures that reduce the engine’s volumetric efficiency and can reduce the amount of spark advance available, which further reduces power.

 

 

• Operating with oversized tires - which have the same effect on the vehicle as numerically reducing the final drive ratio, thereby reducing the available torque.

 

 

• Engine or transmission calibration balanced more toward detonation prevention and fuel economy.

 

 

• Improper axle ratio for operating conditions.

 

 

• Comparison to previous vehicle with higher displacement engine (Big Block L18) or different final drive ratio.

 

Correction

Updated ECM and TCM calibrations are now available to address these concerns. Reprogram the specified controller(s) with updated calibration files using the TIS2WEB Service Programming System (SPS) application based on the engine and transmission combinations listed below. As always, make sure your Tech 2® is updated with the latest software version.

 

Important: These calibrations will be selectable. Be sure to select the correct files for the vehicle you are programming.

 

 

LY6 (VIN K) Engine and 6L90 (MYD) Transmission

Reprogram the ECM with an updated engine calibration. This calibration will receive an alternative spark table to optimize available torque. Some audible spark knock may be heard under severe applications. Minor spark knock under severe operating conditions should be considered characteristic for this alternative calibration.

 

Reprogram the TCM with an updated transmission calibration. This calibration will make downshifts available more readily in the 64-80 km/h (40-50 mph) range, and during low speed throttle apply.

 

These calibrations will be available as an ECM/TCM programming sequence event.

 

From the controllet list, select "ECM/TCM (Automatic Transmission Only)".

 

There are 2 calibration part numbers that are "selectable" for each controller. Read the description to determine the correct calibration for this condition.

 

 

LY6 (VIN K) Engine and 4L80 (MT1) or 4L70 (M70) Transmission

Reprogram the ECM with an updated engine calibration. This calibration will receive changes to make the throttle progression more aggressive and to increase the idle speed at high temperatures.

 

No alternative transmission calibration is available.

 

 

L76 (VIN Y) Engine and 4L70 (M70) Transmission (2007 Only)

Reprogram the ECM with an updated engine calibration. This calibration will soften the feel of the active fuel management transition.

 

Reprogram the TCM with an updated transmission calibration. This calibration will improve engine performance and shift quality.

 

These calibrations will be available separately and will need to be installed individually. Both calibrations should be installed to address this condition.

 

 

Air Intake Temperatures

Inspect the seal between the air box and inner fender to assure there are no gaps or leaks. Hot engine compartment air entering the air intake can reduce the amount of available spark and have a negative impact on available engine power.

For vehicles repaired under warranty, use the appropriate labor operation for the repair performed.

Anyone had this reprogramming performed on their truck and if so what are your results? What were your initial problems that led you to get the reprogramming done? Have you seen a change in your fuel economy.

Just had it done to my truck today at the dealer. It does make a difference, mainly in the shift patterns of the 6L90-truck doesn't bog down & be slow to downshift like before. Truck definitely has better throttle response, won't know about the towing difference for a few weeks though.

    • A while back on another thread there were comments and thoughts on air filters and I know that can tend to be a bit of a hot topic because of outfits that have a vested interest in selling aftermarket air boxes fitted with the gauze type of oiled elements touting the lower air restriction. However and unfortunately I don't know where I have seen the test results in the past about the amount of dirt through a test procedure that these style of filters do pass more dirt through than a properly designed ( not some cheap Chinese knock off ) paper/synesthetic media filter can do. Lake Speed had a conversation on that topic with one of the employees at Donaldson and there seemed to be a consensus of these oiled filters falling short in the absolute percentage of dirt holdback.    Which all ties back into how good the air filter is on the engine at keeping dirt out as that is going to reflect as a contaminant introduced into the oil as well as cylinder wear even if some of that dirt does find its way out of the exhaust rather then the crank case. Put another way that one can throw the kitchen sink at filtering the oil and using a bypass system which I fully expect will do nothing but good for the oils contamination but if the air filter system isn't doing its job then its preventing the engine from reaching the best wear/lasting case scenario instead.    Now perhaps this topic is or isn't for this particular thread but Grumpy Bear or anyone else for that matter, do you have access to some scientific trust worthy testing on engine air filter types to get some proper comparison data to post up.
    • WOW, something we agreed on. I only bought at sticker twice. A 94 impala ss and an Acura intagra type r. Made money on the first. Still have the second.
    • I prefer new, but not without a deal. Historically I've bought severely aged new inventory, leftover model year, unpopular configuration kind of stuff that sits around on dealer lots until they just want it gone. $10k off MSRP kind of stuff on a mid-priced truck. That really, really helps knock down that first year depreciation. It also requires being somewhat flexible on colors and options. I wouldn't buy a 4 cylinder if I was looking for an 8 cylinder, but if I got blue paint instead of black, or a great deal was lacking a minor option, I'm willing to overlook those things for savings.   Used <> used. Condition and history are everything. If I'm buying used I'm looking for cream of the crop. The truck from the guy who religiously pampers it, and then decides a year later he wants newer and nicer. NOT the ex-rental vehicle, or the crew cab traded in by the family with 7 kids who like to throw food, and the oil only got changed when there was time long after the oil life monitor started alerting.
    • @Grumpy Bear the conclusion from your post about doubling engine life has me curious. Are we literally talking an expected life of 250,000 miles potentially becomes 500,000 miles with a step up in filtration for fresh oil at "the oil factory" when it's bottled? I know you said that's a single variable among many, but, that's significant if the implication extends that far into a real world use case. I would think the oil marketing folks would really eat that up and make it known.   Particles introduced during oil change is a fairly easy one to avoid, but probably not intuitive as one would think. I.e. using a clean funnel. But...what was it wiped with? Paper towel leaves behind little fibers. A solvent if not dried is not something one would want to introduce into their engine with clean oil. And, keeping the oil filler neck clean and free of buildup.. Look at some guys engine bays and they're an absolute mess. Some say that's better than the drawbacks of cleaning it. I'm not a buyer of that idea.   I've also wondered if "flooding" the top end of the engine with oil while filling is a bad idea. During normal lubrication the oil flows in a gutter back into the galleys. But if you flood the area you're potentially washing the top of the rockers, springs, and other areas which may not get much oil wash normally, and you're mixing all that into the new oil. I just don't have the patience to pour slowly. 😆
