Changing Out Stock Headunit

Recommended Posts

I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to describe this. I hope it makes snese.

I changed out my stock head unit and speakers.

I bought the adapter from Best Buy for the Onstar and door chimes. I assumed that this would allow the Onstar to play through the speakers. In fact, it plays through the adapter itself. I have buried the adapter under the dash so the volume is pretty weak.

Is this really the way the adapter works? The chimes are loud clacks through the adapter and when I use the Onstar Phone if I am on the highway, I have a hard time hearing it.

Is there a different adapter that will allow me to play the phone though the stereo?

Does this makes sense?

Thanks in advance.

I'm by no means a pro but that doesn't seem right.

Which adapter did you buy?

I just bough the PAC OS-3 today. It won't be installed for a few weeks but I fully expect that to work in the same manner that the stock HU does.

All sounds come through the front speakers. If it doesn't I'll be bitter.

Gotta love it....it costs about $180 to keep the steering wheel controls and Onstar...starting to make the HU look reasonable.

I'll take a look at it today. It's freakin raining again here in NH so I am going to put my sub in. It was in a plain brown bag. I guess it is what they use when they install radio's at Best Buy. It is a small blue box with 3 connection points on each side.

One connection is for GM trucks with the Bose system and the other is the one for the non Bose system and third connector is power connection.

I have the non Bose system and have a plain work truck.

I put the sub in on Saturday and I looked at the adapter, of course, I have now forgotten the brand name. It is not the same as the Crutchfield one.

Do you really need the adapter to install an aftermarket radio in an 04? Or can I just get a harness and it will still work? I have the headunit already from my old 98 truck and I don't really like the stock headunit. I took the door chime out of my 98 and was wondering if it is essentially the same thing when I don't install the adapter on this new truck?
