I just bought an 01 2500 hd with the 8.1 Vortec. I don't know which way to go in regards to adding oil. The sticker on the window "says" Mobil, which leads me to believe it has synthetic, but I'm not sure. Is there anyway to tell if it has synth or dino? What would you guys recommend short of changing it to be sure?

The sticker on the window could just be that the truck had an oil change at a Mobil station - there is no way to be sure what oil is in there unless you contact the previous owner.

 

Personally, the first thing I would do after purchasing a used truck is change;

- oil,

- oil filter,

- air filter,

- anti-freeze (flush radiator)

- plugs

- front / rear gear oil

- check all other fluids (don't change the tranny fluid if it has high miles and it has never been changed before)

- add FI cleaner (I suggest Techtron)

 

How many miles does the truck have on it?

You can't go wrong with Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic, that's what I would use.

85000 miles. The oil is fresh.

You can't go wrong with Mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic, that's what I would use.

Little to no danger as long as you use the proper fluid, check it when the tranny is hot and don't 'power flush' the trans.

New detergent fluid scrubs the parts clean and removes all the tarnish.

-Tarnish could clog oil lines.

-Parts could end up not being the correct tolerance and could fail.
