Spark Plug Tourqe

Growing up for the vehicles i have owned it was thread in the spark plug once hand tight turn 1/4 turn.

 

I now have the 8.1 in a 2001 silverado is it any different now?

I would not think so. A bigger engine does not equate more compression or need for more tourqe. I would try to guage how tight they are in when removing and try to get them back close. Just my .02....

 

The parts house you buy plugs from should be able to advise as well.

According to the GM service manual for the 8.1 liter the spark plugs should be torqued to 22 lb ft or 30 N-m.

I days past when spark plugs used a collapsable sealing washer it may have been marginally acceptable to install finger tight and then an additional partial turn. Many of todays spark plugs use a tapered seat for the sealing surface and at the same time are screwing into an aluminum cylinder head. I strongly recommend the use of a torque wrench along with an anti-sieze on the threads. Aluminum threads are not very forgiving of improper service techniques. I am very happy with the torque wrenches I have from the SEARS Craftsman tool catalog.
