Ping Or Knock

i have an 05 1500 sierra 5.3 litre, when i start it, it pings when initially starting, almost sounds like a diesel no check engine light, any suggestions? it has 48000 miles

Probably the cold start knock (piston slap). My truck's got 169,000 miles on it, and it's done it for as long as I can rember. Pretty common on these engines, and doesn't really harm anything.

 

Also, do a search for piston slap or cold start knock. There have been many topics discussing it already.
