Sounds like you need some polish, then some kind of protectant (sealant, wax, etc).

What does the polish actually do compared to the wax and what brand do you recommend?

My favorite is Ear Wax.

But seriously, you need to do a clay bar treatment first before you do a half-day's work on waxing and polishing. It will get all the microparticles out of your paint and it will be as slick as new paint again.

The polish helps to restore some of the oils into the paint to help it maintain its shine.

As stated above its a good idea to clay. If your paint is in need of polishing to bring back some shine a good plan would be this:

 

Wash

Clay

Paint Cleaner

Polish

Wax

Wax

 

I use Meguiars products for this, the steps above are definately long and involved you may use whichever of those steps you want to achieve your desired results.

You can pick up what you need from most auto supply stores or some Kmart and WalMart stores. It comes in a kit, Mothers and Meguiars are both good brands. The kit comes with lubricant and a clay bar. Basically you spray the lubricant on your paint and rub the clay across it gently. Use plenty of lubricant and knead your clay often so you are using a clean side. After a few passes wipe off the lubricant and move to the next section. There are good instructions on the box also.

I like the Meguiars "Gold Class" paste wax in the black can.

 

But yeah, you need to clay/polish it first, then wax it.
