Antilock Braking System

I have a 2001 GMC Z-71 4x4. I changed the rear rotors and pads not too long ago and now when stopping it's like the ABS system thinks I'm on ice the last 20 feet or so and it activates. Very dangerous. I have experienced this on other GM vehicles when the sensors have gone bad in the front wheel bearings, but as far as I can determine there are no wheel bearing sensors or any other kind of sensor at the rear axle that I have found on my truck that could have been damaged from this brake cahnge. I have done my own brakes on this truck several times and have never had this happen. My ABS light is not displaying in the dash, but does activate when I pull the fuse so I know the light works. I do have a service engine light that is lit but I think the truck was built with it on so no change there. As far as I can tell nothing else has changed on the vehicle. Any suggestions you can offer would be helpfull. Thank you.

Condition

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1999-2002 Chevrolet Silverado, 2000-2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban, 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, 1999-2002 GMC Sierra, 2000-2002 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL vehicles located in Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. These vehicles may have a condition permitting corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor. If the brakes are applied while the vehicle is travelling at a speed of greater than 6 km/h (3.7 mph) but less than 16 km/h (10 mph), the corrosion may cause an unwanted anti-lock brake system (ABS) activation. If this condition occurred where stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur.

 

Correction

Dealers are to clean and treat the affected area, and in some cases, replace the front wheel speed sensor.

For dealers with involved vehicles, a Campaign Initiation Detail Report containing the complete Vehicle Identification Number, customer name and address data has been prepared and is being furnished to involved dealers. Dealers that have no involved vehicles currently assigned will not receive a report with the recall bulletin.

 

The Campaign Initiation Detail Report may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this program.

 

Parts Information

Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO=Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO=Customer Special Order.

 

Note: Very few vehicles will require front wheel speed sensor replacement; if required, order appropriate part from GMSPO.

Service Procedure

The following procedure provides instructions for repairing a corrosion condition where the front wheel speed sensor mounts on the front wheel bearing assembly.

 

Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist and support as necessary.

Remove both front tires and wheels.

 

Compress the front brake caliper pistons.

3.1. Install a large C-clamp over the top of the caliper housing and against the back of the outboard pad.

 

3.2. Slowly tighten the C-clamp until the pistons are pushed completely into the caliper bores.

 

3.3. Remove the C-clamp from the caliper.

 

Important: It is not necessary to remove the front brake caliper from the bracket when removing the bracket in the next step.

 

Remove the two bolts that attach the front brake caliper mounting brackets to the knuckle.

Notice: Support the brake caliper with heavy mechanic's wire, or equivalent, whenever it is separated from its mount and the hydraulic flexible brake hose is still connected. Failure to support the caliper in this manner will cause the flexible brake hose to bear the weight of the caliper, which may cause damage to the brake hose and in turn may cause a brake fluid leak.

 

Remove the brake caliper and bracket as an assembly and support it with heavy mechanic's wire or equivalent. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the caliper.

Mark the relationship of the rotor to the bearing hub.

If equipped, remove the rotor retaining push nuts from the wheel studs.

 

Remove the rotor.

 

Remove the bolt (1) that attaches the wheel speed sensor to the bearing hub.

Notice: Carefully remove the sensor by pulling it straight out of the bore. DO NOT use a screwdriver or other device to try to pry the sensor out of the bore. Prying will cause the sensor body to break off in the bore.

 

Remove the wheel speed sensor from the bearing hub assembly.

 

 

 

Important: The mounting surface on the sensor must be flat in the next step in order to be mounted correctly on the bearing hub assembly. If the mounting surface on the sensor is warped or bent, the sensor must be replaced.

 

Inspect to see if the mounting surface on the sensor is flat. Check the mounting surface on the sensor head for flatness by placing it on the edge of a metal machinist's scale or other suitable straight edge to measure the flatness. Check the sensor for flatness in multiple positions/directions (minimum 3).

• If the sensor mounting surface is NOT flat (1), the sensor must be replaced. Proceed to the next step and replace the sensor.

 

• If the sensor mounting surface IS flat (2), the sensor IS to be reused. Proceed to Step 16.

 

 

 

 

 

Remove the wheel speed harness mounting clips from the knuckle (4) upper control arm (3) and frame (2).

Disconnect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector (1) from the vehicle wiring harness.

Connect the new wheel speed sensor harness electrical connector to the vehicle wiring harness.

Attach the wheel speed sensor harness to the frame, upper control arm, and the knuckle.

 

 

 

Temporarily plug the wheel speed sensor hole (1) in the bearing hub to prevent debris from entering it when you clean it.

Important: All rust and corrosion must be removed from the wheel speed sensor mounting surfaces on the bearing hub in the next step.

 

Using a wire brush, sandpaper, emery cloth, scotch brite, or equivalent, thoroughly clean the wheel speed sensor mounting surface (2) on the bearing hub to remove any rust of corrosion.

Using compressed air, remove all debris from the bearing hub surface.

Using a clean shop towel, clean the sensor and the O-ring.

Important: While the corrosion is drying in the next step, begin performing Steps 3-20 on the opposite side front wheel speed sensor.

 

Apply (spray) two thin coats of the specified rust penetrating lubricant (corrosion inhibitor) listed in this bulletin, to the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub. Allow to dry for 3-5 minutes between coats.

When the corrosion inhibitor is dry to the touch (about 10 minutes), apply a light coating of the specified grease to the complete sensor mounting surface on the bearing hub and to the sensor and O-ring.

Remove the temporary plug from the hole in the bearing hub.

Install the wheel speed sensor in the bearing hub and install the bolt. Ensure that the sensor is seated flat against the hub.

Tighten

Tighten the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

 

Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor connector and place a digital volt meter (DVM) across the terminals of the wheel speed sensor connector. Rotate the bearing at approximately one revolution per second. The minimum reading should be at least 350 ACmVs. If the reading is less than 350 ACmVs, the wheel speed sensor must be replaced. Follow Steps 12-15 for instructions on replacing the wheel speed sensor. This step must be repeated after the new sensor has been installed.

Notice: Whenever the brake rotor has been separated from the wheel bearing flange, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the rotor and flange. Failure to do this may result in increased lateral runout of the rotor and brake.

 

Important: If the rotor was removed using the jack screw method, you must ensure that the hub flange is free of nicks or marks caused by this procedure. Remove all raised nicks or marks before installing the rotor.

 

Align the rotor to its original position on the hub and install the rotor.

Install the caliper and caliper mounting bracket assembly.

Perform the following procedure before installing the brake caliper bracket mounting bolts.

27.1. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch.

 

27.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner, or the equivalent, and allow to dry.

 

27.3. Apply threadlocker to the threads of the bolts.

 

Install the caliper bracket mounting bolts.

Tighten the brake caliper mounting bracket mounting bolts to the specification listed below.

 

Tighten

 

• 1500 Series vehicles -- 175 N·m (129 lb ft)

 

• 2500 Series vehicles -- 300 N·m (221 lb ft)

 

Install the front tire and wheel assembly.

Tighten

Tighten the wheel nuts to 190 N·m (140 lb ft).

 

Complete Steps 21-30 on the opposite side front wheel speed sensor.

Lower the vehicle.

With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.

Slowly release the brake pedal.

Wait 15 seconds and repeat Steps 32-33 until a firm pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.

Customer Reimbursement - For Canada

Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to correct the condition addressed in this bulletin are to be submitted by January 31, 2006.

 

All reasonable customer paid receipts should be considered for reimbursement. The amount to be reimbursed will be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if completed by an authorized General Motors dealer.

 

When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:

 

• Proof of ownership at time of repair.

 

• Original paid receipt confirming the amount of repair expense(s) that were not reimbursed, a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.

 

Claims for customer reimbursement on previously paid repairs are to be submitted as required by WINS.

 

Important: Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 1.6.2, for specific procedures regarding customer reimbursement verification.

 

Courtesy Transportation

The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product recall is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines.

Please provide your dealer with your original paid receipts or invoices verifying the repair, the amount charged, proof of payment, the date of payment of those charges, and proof of ownership of the vehicle at the time of the repair. Your request for reimbursement, including the information and documents mentioned above, must be received by your dealer by January 31, 2006. my '99 NBS Sierra does the same thing occasionally. I just haven't taken the time to clean the sensors yet.

    • Any update if the new valve cover help with the oil consumption?  I have a 2014 GMC sierra and my truck is consuming a lot of oil so I’m wondering if replacing the driver side valve cover will stop some of the oil consumption. Thanks 
    • I bought belts and pulleys for my '20 L5P at Rock Auto a couple years ago. I have used them for many years, and almost always save significant money, especially when I buy maintenance stuff ahead of time.   They carry many OEM parts, which is all I use unless an aftermarket is shown to be same/superior, or if it is an insignificant part or unavailable OEM part anywhere else. RA is usually lower priced, often by a bunch, but parts are sometimes unavailable or out of stock, and I do shop around and sometimes find better prices at other sites.   Be aware that you pay shipping, and if you buy multiple items and they are coming from different warehouses, the shipping can kill the advantage. Planning ahead is best if possible.   If you have a transmission service in the near future, check out their OEM (AC Delco ULV) fluid, usually MUCH less than anywhere else.
    • New member here, very long time occasional guest. Saw this thread, thought it would be a good time to contribute someting. It is only my experience and not a claim that everyone will have the same.   I bought my '20 3500 L5P new and have put 99.9% (literally) of it's current ~400k miles on it myself, with over 50% of that towing loads between 4k to 15k, and to me this truck has been nothing short of amazing. For the first 235k I had zero issues, and from there until 321k I replaced a NOx sensor, two failing glow plugs, and three of the notorious injector connectors. I believe this truck is in part, a testament to good luck, but also good care and following a decent maintenance schedule (I also keep meticulous records.) As a result, it looks as good as a well cared for 70k rig, up and down, inside and out.   At some point before that 321k mile mark I began to get a little spooked about the 10L1000, especially the valve body. Word of mouth about potential issues prompted me to jump on the net to sift through all the noise and determine what all the fuss was about. I routinely take long trips, coast-to-coast and points in between, so roadside breakdowns can be '...a thousand miles from nowhere' and a bit of a challenge, and though I had no issues, my guard was up and activated.   And then I stumbled across a chance to salvage some parts off a new 2025 that had been wrecked in transport. I grabbed a few wear items (alternator, pulleys, etc.) and on a whim asked what the ten speeder would cost me. It was cheap...really cheap. I knew some changes had been made in the '24+ version 10L and were supposedly not compatible, but I called service/parts at my local Chevy dealer and asked why and they didn't know. A call to a well known aftermarket transmission outfit revealed it was very likely it would be fine, but to them not 100% sure.   Because it was cheap (really cheap) and I was spooked, I took the chance. Had it installed by a local shop and it worked like a champ, shifted just like the original. At it's first service at 37k, I had the shop put in a Next Gen valve body kit, which after some initial hiccups and rough shifts, smoothed out though with somewhat firmer shifting.   All that said, I have a very serious concern about my newer transmission as just two weeks ago it suddenly began to exhibit a strong reluctance to engage forward or reverse. It was a bit past due anyway so I took it in for service. The reason it was sticking was due to 'glitter' in the fluid clogging the filter...not good folks, often indicates a converter giving out. We ended up going ahead with the new filter and fluid, first to see if it would move and shift, and then if so buy me a little time. It did, and I've driven it over a thousand miles and it is shifting smooth, no noises or slipping. Regardless, it looks like a third gearbox is in my future so I can resume taking long trips with some confidence. In the very short term, my curiosity will have me examining the fluid to check how much glitter has reappeared.   An earlier poster had alleged, in the context of 10L100 failures, that it is another example of how we seasoned citizens somehow descend into hysteria, lose control of our senses, and react irrationally after brief encounters with the idiocy of the internet infosphere. Let me say (and I have used and abused said internet since it's infancy) there is no segment of the populace that has a corner on over-reaction to digital garbage. Just as my offering of experience in this arena is purely anecdotal and should not be considered gospel or all-encompassing, I believe it is still worthwhile information to consider, along with other relevant anecdotal experiences about things like complex transmissions, especially when balanced with other sources.   So to answer the original question, yes I got high miles out of my first 10L, trouble free for 321,000. Now I really wonder how much longer it would have went. Did I 'overreact' to the internet ghouls by replacing a 'good' one with a 'bad' one? Maybe. Who knows, the thing might have taken a puke a 100 miles later. So I'll just fix it again, then move on and start thinking about all the other stuff that will eventually wear out. It still has the original brakes (they're at ~60%), original injectors/pump, turbo, water pump, etc....pretty much original everything. Knock on wood.
    • At peak temperature.  They get to cool down and warm up more, especially those with the external cooler.  I have three GMT900s and one of them has over 225K on its original transmission.  Fluid gets changed about every 36K miles, all of it.     It's not the bean counters, it was the government.  They had to meet CAFE standards and other government requirements.   To get around that, we tune them and modify them to our liking.
