Switching From Power Folding To Camper Mirrors

Recommended Posts

I just purchased the camper mirrors, the set that has the new switch assembly (because I'm going from folding to non-folding mirrors). In the instruction manual it states that for either case (if I did or did not have factory folding mirrors), that the "switch must be programmed with the latest calibration software by an authorized GM vehicle dealership for the Trailer Towing Mirrors to operate correctly". I remember that someone on this forum made this same mirror swap and I thought that they did not need to have any programming done. Am I going to be able to install these mirrors myself or wait for the dealership? If I do install them, is there going to be an issue that would cause me not to be able to drive the vehicle, or just with the mirror functions? I am going to pick up a 31 foot travel trailer on Saturday and I really wanted to have these mirrors installed and operational before then.

Thanks in advance.

If its not programmed you may not get the mirror turn signal indicators and maybe no heat?? Mirror programming should have no impact on driving.

I went to the non folding camper mirrors that have heat, adjust, and turn signals. I left my original switch assy in the door, and everything works perfect. The only thing that does not work obviously, is the power fold button. No programming involved

I believe those are the same mirrors that I have. So I guess I'll be ok as long as I don't swap out the switch assemblies? The only difference I can see between the assemblies is that the new one is missing the power fold button.

Yep! That is exactly what I did.

Working great! So much nicer when pulling and backing the travel trailer :D

Do you have picture of those mirrors? How much did they cost you?

I just got a trailer and need better vision out back. Thinking about changing mirrors.

You can see a pic of the mirrors here

The list price is $480, but I paid $420. Installation was easy. The hardest part is getting inner door panel off, which is necessary to replace the mirror wiring and switch. There is another version of the mirrors that doesn't include the switch that is $30 less if you currently don't have the folding mirrors (or if you don't care that you retain the unoperable power fold switch after installing the mirrors). I'm going to go ahead and install the switch that came with the mirrors the next time I go to the dealer and have them program it so I can sell my power fold mirrors complete with the correct switch.

By the way, if you try to change switch assemblies without reprogramming, the truck doesn't recognize the switch at all.

I would highly, HIGHLY recommend keeping your standard Power Fold driver's switch to use with your new camper mirrors.

The programming involved in swapping switches is no easy task. In fact, it took GM Engineering 2-days with my truck on a Tech 2 to figure the process out.

You are lucky. In switching from the DL3 Power Fold to the DLM Camper mirrors, you retain all functionality of the mirrors (heat, power adjust, turn signal) with your stock switch.....except now you have a dummy power fold button that doesnt do anything. If you ever want to put your stock folders back on, you're still set up with the correct switch and programming.

I swapped from DLM Camper to the DL3s, so it was essential for me to change out my switch and go through all of the hassle just to add the one power folding function.

Oh yeah, you will definately need a new woodgrain trim-ring (GMC or Chevy dependant) if you do in fact swap over to the camper mirror switch, or else you'll have a big hole in your driver's armrest.

Well, then I guess I just wasted 30 dollars on the switch. If I take it in just to have them program the switch and they charge me by the hour, it could get ugly if it is that difficult to do.

One thing I noticed today while driving on the interstate is that the camper mirrors make a lot more wind noise than the sport style mirrors. My truck used to be quiet. Now I have to turn the radio up to drown out the noise. They sure are big and ugly, but get the job done.

Haha,,,,exactly why I make do towing my boat with the DL3s! Sure do miss their functionality though.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
