Which Chevy V8 Engines Are The

best when compared to other v8 engines (small and big block) Chevy produced?

I am looking to buy a used Chevy truck or suv, year 2000-2007 and could use some advice on which engines may be better or less problematic than other ones.

I am not a Ford guy at all (no offense to you Ford folks) but I just got rid of my F-250 Triton v8 which if you know anything about is prone to spitting out spark plugs.

All manufactures have made mistakes and I would like to avoid getting into any new ones so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The only real "issue" with the engines of those years, and it's not even really an issue, more just an annoyance, is the piston slap, or cold start knock (CSK). It only occurs briefly when the truck is first started, and doesn't damage anything (my 4.8L has done it as long as I can remember, and I've got 170k). Search on here for "piston slap" or "cold start knock" and you'll find tons of discussions about it.

Well your engine choice would depend on the use of the truck. If you plan to haul heavy stuff or want just brute power get a 7.4L or 8.1L vortec. If it is just medium duty seeing limited pulling and hauling go to a 6.0L. And lastly if looking for fuel economy and limited acutal work use get a 5.7 or 5.3L. A word of advice the 7.4 or 8.1 are going to be stump pullers but gas mileage will be lower unless you start adding to the electronics such as programs in the computer etc. Hope this helps.

For me i think the 4.8 is a good choice it offers a good gas mileage and engine power and easy to add power and tuning

I would say that the 4.8 is indeed a solid motor, I have one, I would say the 5.3 would be the better choice. It will get almost, if not the same, mileage and has more power on tap stock. A full size truck is not exactly light so the bigger, if only slightly, engine is going to have less work to do to move it.

BTW the 4.8 and 5.3 are basicly the same engine, the extra cubes come from the longer stroke of the 5.3.

4.8 / 5.3 / 6.0 are all strong units... They share basic architecture and design and many are still running strong with well over 200K on them.

Is the engine in my truck an LS1, LS2, etc?(see sig) I've been wondering this forever. :)

Thanks, Jeff.

I wonder why the LM4 went out of production. I want an LMG! Not because of the flex-fuel ability but, because the name sounds cool. :)

I'll take an LS9 please. :)

I like the 5.7. Every truck I've ever owned had one in it, and had well over 200k on the clock. The mpg isn't that great though.
