1998 Gmc Sierra 1500 Won't Start

History of no starts when truck sits for afew days.

Have replaced plug wires, battery, fuel pump relay, fuel filter.

Getting worse. Always keep the tank 1/2 full or greater.

Cleaned contacts at fuel filler neck ground.

While driving engine light went on. Disconnected battery to reset.

Have been listening for fuel pump noise when turn key. Last few times I didn't here the pump running.

Banged tank hard, turned key and heard fuel pump, truck started.

Beat the tank real good today when it wouldn't start and nothing.

Am I dealing with a fuel pump problem or pressure regulator.

Are they together in the tank?

Replace regulator first?

Sounds like the pump is going.

yeah, if one time you turn the key to run (without starting) and you hear the pump and the next time you turn it to run and don't hear the pump but banging on the tank makes it work...that would put the prob in the tank. If all your connections and grounds are good, replace the pump.
