Octane Question

The only way you will ever know for sure is to check the MPG on 87 for at least 8 to 10 fill ups. Then do the same using the 93 and see if see a noticable difference. Many people believe very strongly that they get better mileage with premium and their truck runs better. Others do not agree with this.

I use 93 and it did improve my MPG but not a great deal. I do not have the #s with me right now but it was about a .75 mpg improvement. I also tow a 6500 lb camper on occasion and I truly believe it helps me when tuggin the camper.

I tried premium in my work Caravan with a 3.3L and it made no difference at all. The difference is a 9.5 to 1 compression ratio in the 5.3 vs apprx 8:1 in the van. It just cannot take advantage of the additional octane.

Try it and keep good records and you will know for sure.

I ran 87 octane in my 98 but the guy before me had been running it on 89 octane since 22,000 miles. It did not like the 87 so I decided to try the 91 octane. It got better gas mileage with the 91 to offset the 20 cents difference in price. So I ran that, like Trey said, just try it and figure up your gas mileage over a few tanks to see if it will make a difference. Not every vehicle will see one.

It started here.

Got it.

I wasn't slighted by your fools and money comment. The point I may not have gotten across was that the only effect that higher octane would have on me was to thin an already embarrassingly thin wallet. :D
