2003 1500hd Crew Cab 6.0l Won't Start

Got a wierd one for you guys. My buddy went out to start his truck last night, and when he put the key in the ignition and tried to start it, he got nothing. He looked down, and as soon as he turns the key, the gear indicator goes right to second gear. The truck isn't in second gear, but is in park, and he can't get it to move. The ignition won't engage the starter since the truck/tranny thinks it's in second. Sounds like some sort of electrical problem. Has anyone seen anything like this before?
